Charlotte Independence News Release

CHARLESTON, S.C.(May 23, 2015) - It was a beautiful evening, but not exactly a beautiful game when the Charleston Battery hosted the Charlotte Independence on Saturday night to a 1-1 draw. This defensive duel saw more tackles than chances as Charlotte's Jorge Herrera and Charleston's Dane Kelly each tallied a goal to split the points.

Charleston got out of the gate first with a long throw. O'Brian Woodbine lined up to take a throw-in deep in the Charlotte half, and the Charlotte line shrank away into the box. Woodbine read the defense and found Kelly at the top of the 18. He made the finish look easy and tucked it away into the right corner.

Charlotte responded quickly, getting numbers down field and maintaining possession for minutes at a time. Though it was a bit of a lucky break for the Independence when Herrera was brought down in the box for a penalty kick in the 22nd minute. Herrera stepped up to take the spot kick and put it straight down the middle to level the score.

From there both sides struggled to move the ball and it wasn't until the 80th minute that the game really broke open. For Charlotte it was the worst case scenario as midfielder Paolo Del Piccolo was shown a second yellow card and the visitors had to finish the game with 10 men. Charleston pushed the man advantage, but failed to find the net and the game finished even.

It was a valuable point for the Independence, who have struggled on the road this year. But the Battery will see it as points dropped in a growing Carolinas rivalry.

The Independence will get some time off next weekend, before traveling to Richmond to face the Kickers on Sunday, June 7. Charlotte and Richmond have split their previous matches, with each team winning its respective home contest by a score of 3-0.
