Capitales Take Series Lead After Low-Scoring Battle

May 23, 2015 - American Association (AA)
Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

After the Gary SouthShore RailCats rallied to take a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning, the Quebec Capitales came back to take game three of the four game series Saturday, 3-2.

For the third game in a row, the Capitales (2-1) struck first. This time, that run didn't come across until the fifth when Kalian Sams led off with a triple and came home on a sacrifice fly.

Quebec second baseman Jonathan Malo led off the sixth with a double, and tried to score on a fly out to left field, but this time, Adam Taylor gunned him down at the plate to keep it a 1-0 game.

The 'Cats (1-2) took their first lead after a two-out rally in the seventh when Drew Martinez doubled down the left field line, bringing in Jon Jones and Zac Mitchell.

With runners on first and second and two outs in the eighth, 'Cats pitcher A.J. Quintero threw a wild pitch, allowing the runners to both move up. The mistake proved costly as Yuniesky Gurriel blooped a single in shallow center field to put Quebec on top for good.

Gary's eighth- and ninth-inning rallies fell short, and the Capitales took the game when closer Deryk Hooker shut the door.

Starting pitcher Travis McGee went five strong innings, giving up one run on three hits and two walks to go with two strikeouts.

The RailCats and Capitales will play the series finale Sunday at 2:10 p.m.
