Match Preview: Red Bulls Host Philly in Sunday Showdown

May 23, 2015 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
New York Red Bulls News Release

The New York Red Bulls return home this Sunday to take on rival Philadelphia Union. Kickoff at Red Bull Arena is scheduled for 5 p.m., with coverage on Fox Sports 1, Fox Sports Deportes and Red Bulls Radio on SiriusXM FC Channel 94. It will be military appreciation night at Red Bull Arena.

New York returns home after climbing to 4-1-5 on the season with a scoreless draw last weekend at FC Dallas. The Red Bulls were held off the scoreboard for the first time this season, but also quieted the high-scoring Western Conference leaders.

New York is 3-0-2 at Red Bull Arena, most recently defeating New York City FC, 2-1, on May 10.

Philadelphia enters the weekend at 2-7-3, but with the momentum of a 1-0 win over D.C. United last weekend at PPL Park in Chester, Pa.

The Red Bulls are 7-4-2 all-time against the Union since the club joined MLS in 2010. New York is also 5-0-1 at Red Bull Arena, and have outscored Philly 9-3 in Harrison.

Bradley Wright-Phillips leads the team with five goals after a derby brace. Wright-Phillips also has three assists, tied for the team lead with Brazilian midfielder Felipe and winger Lloyd Sam. In all, six Red Bulls have scored at least once this season, compared to nine goal scorers in all of 2014.

Luis Robles earned his third clean sheet of the year, and 22nd of his career, in Dallas. Robles is currently third in team history in wins, one behind Tim Howard. Tony Meola, who will provide commentary for Fox Sports 1, remains the franchise's all-time leader in wins amongst goalkeepers, with 48. Robles also has the best winning percentage in team history, with his 36 wins coming in 82 appearances (.591).

It will be a reunion of sorts for Red Bulls coach Jesse Marsch and Union boss Jim Curtin. The two played together with both the Chicago Fire and Chivas USA. Marsch has started strong, with the 4-1-5 record tying the best 10-game start to a coaching tenure in New York history. With 17 points in 10 games, Marsch is level with his mentor, Bob Bradley, who started 5-3-2 after taking the reins for the 2003 campaign.

On the field, the Union will be without captain Maurice Edu, who is suspended due to yellow card accumulation, and may not have leading scorer Fernando Aristeguieta, who has been on international duty with his native Argentina. Brian Sylvestre, the third 'keeper used by the Union this year, bounced back from a tough outing against Vancouver to record the clean sheet against D.C. Sylvestre must share the credit with the backline, as United did not register a shot on goal in the contest.

Sunday will be a double-header at Red Bull Arena, with New York Red Bulls II, the organizations' USL side, taking on FC Montreal following the conclusion of New York-Philly. Kickoff for the second match is slated for 8 p.m.
