Lancaster JetHawks News Release

LANCASTER, Calif. - The JetHawks rode a seven-run second inning and a nine-run third to a series-winning 22-5 victory over the High Desert Mavericks on Thursday night at The Hangar.

Trailing 4-2 in the second inning, the JetHawks (21-20) sent 12 batters to the plate in the bottom half, rallying for seven runs on six hits and three walks. Mavericks (20-20) starting pitcher Tyler Smith (1-4) yielded nine runs (eight earned) on nine hits over just 1.2 innings of work.

Jack Mayfield plated the first two Lancaster runs on a single in the first inning. Mayfield added two more RBI singles in the second and third innings, finishing 4-for-6 with two runs scored. The quartet of Mayfield, Brett Phillips, Danry Vasquez and A.J. Reed combined for 13 hits, 14 RBI and 11 runs scored.

Phillips tripled in both the second and seventh innings, making him the first JetHawks player to hit two triples in a game this season.

Lancaster followed with nine more runs on six hits and four walks in the third inning, sending 13 to the plate against reliever Ryne Slack.

High Desert scored four runs against JetHawks starter Evan Grills (2-4) on a first-inning, three-run homer by Ryan Cordell and an Evan Van Hoosier RBI single in the second. Grills, however, rebounded for four scoreless innings and recorded the win. The left-hander struck out three and walked none, allowing four runs on nine hits.

Tyler Brunnemann and Keegan Yuhl combined to allow the Mavericks just one run on three hits through the final three innings to give Lancaster the series victory.

Chase McDonald hit his sixth home run of the season in the seventh inning, and Reed added his team-leading 11th homer in the eighth.

The final score marked the first time the JetHawks scored 20 or more runs in a game since a 26-5 win over the Lake Elsinore Storm on August 1, 2013.

The JetHawks will open a four-game series against the Inland Empire 66ers on Friday. Bryan Radziewski (0-0, 0.00) will start for Lancaster, and the 66ers will send Jordan Kipper (1-2, 3.38) to the mound.
