Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

SAN BERNARDINO, CA - A couple of late Rancho runs weren't enough to prevent a sweep on Thursday night, as the Inland Empire 66ers handed the Quakes a 4-2 loss and a three-game sweep at San Manuel Stadium.

Fresh off their eight-game winning streak, the Quakes fell flat, scoring just eight total runs over what is now a three-game losing streak.

Quakes' starter Scott Barlow was dealt the loss, but more importantly, left the game early due to an apparent arm injury.

Barlow (4-2) gave up an RBI double to Stephen McGee in the second, then got into trouble in the fourth and was eventually replaced after striking out Angel Rosa for the first out of the inning. Michael Johnson entered the game with runners at first and third and one out and surrendered a sac fly to McGee, as the 66ers took a 2-0 lead.

The 66ers got another run in the sixth off of Luis Meza and another against Ramon Benjamin in the seventh, taking a 4-0 advantage.

Inland Empire starter Sean Newcomb (1-0) was literally unhittable over the first five innings, as the Quakes couldn't do much against the 66ers' lefty.

Delvis Morales opened the sixth with a single, the only hit Newcomb allowed over 5 2/3 innings of scoreless work. After Newcomb walked Kyle Farmer, Michael Smith entered from the Inland Empire bullpen and extinguished the would-be rally by getting Cody Bellinger to line out to first baseman Michael Snyder, who made a terrific back-handed catch to rob him of a run-scoring hit.

Trailing 4-0 in the eighth, the Quakes avoided their first shutout of the year when Farmer doubled home Brandon Trinkwon, making it a 4-1 game.

Tyler Ogle opened the ninth inning with a solo-shot to center field off of Greg Mahle, making it 4-2. For Ogle the home run was his sixth of the year, tying him with Bellinger for the team-lead. A one-out single by Paul Hoenecke then brought the tying run to the plate, but Mahle induced Webster Rivas into a 5-4-3 double-play to end the game, giving Mahle his sixth save of the year.

Bellinger's Cal League-best 15-game hitting streak came to an end on Thursday, as he finished 0-for-3 with a walk.

Rancho (24-16) will send Jeff Brigham (1-2) to the mound on Friday night, opposite San Francisco Giants' rehabbing starter Jake Peavy, as he's expected to start in game one of the four-game series in San Jose. First pitch from San Jose will be 7:00pm on Friday Night.

The Quakes return to LoanMart Field on Wednesday, May 27 against Modesto. That contest against the Nuts is Terra Vista Animal Hospital's Bark in the Ballpark! Pet passes cost just $3, with proceeds benefiting the Rancho Cucamonga Animal Shelter. Tickets for all remaining home games are available at (909) 481-5000 or at rcquakes.com.
