Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Biloxi took the first game of five from Birmingham Thursday night in Huntsville, Ala., with a walk-off single in the bottom of the 12th inning to take a 5-4 win.

Trailing 4-0 for the majority of the contest, the Barons pieced together a four-run top of the ninth to send the game to extra innings. Catcher Adrian Nieto began the rally with a leadoff solo home run, and Courtney Hawkins blasted his sixth homer of the season six batters later. The shot came with Jeremy Farrell at second after being hit by a pitch and Tim Anderson at first on a walk.

Starting pitcher Tony Bucciferro was roughed up for four runs on 11 hits, but the Barons bullpen kept the Shuckers off the board for the next six innings. Both Kyle Hansen and J.B. Wendelken tossed three innings, allowing no hits and striking out four.

The bullpen's shutout, no-hit evening ended in the bottom of the 12th with Raul Fernandez on the hill. Orlando Arcia walked with one out and single from Michael Reed moved the lead runner to second. With two on and two out, Taylor Green singled to center on a line drive to plate the game's winning run.

Seven of Birmingham's hitters recorded hits. Joey DeMichele posted two hits, while Jacob May, Christian Marrero, Danny Hayes, Nieto, Anderson, and Hawkins each had one. May extended his hitting streak to nine games, Hayes to seven games, and Nieto and Hawkins each to six games.

The series continues Friday with a 7:10 p.m. first pitch. Mark Blackmar (0-2, 2.51 ERA) starts for Birmingham while lefty Brent Suter (2-1, 2.78 ERA) gets the start for the Shuckers. The game can be heard live on WERC 105.5 FM and WERFM.com.

The Barons return to Birmingham May 27 for the annual Rickwood Classic at Rickwood Field. They host the Jacksonville Suns for five, with the final four contests played at Regions Field.
