Switchbacks FC Win Their First-Ever U.S. Open Cup Match

Colorado Springs, Colo. (Monday, May 20, 2015) - The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC are heading to Salt Lake City after beating the Harpo's FC in the 2nd round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

"These games are never easy to play because the team came out and was competitive and they fought hard until the end," said Switchbacks FC Head Coach Steve Trittschuh.

The Switchbacks FC came out strong the second the ball was kicked off, and two minutes later Marty Maybin (#9) headed the ball over the keeper off of an assist from Kley Bejarano (#30).

Then in the 35th minute, it was Maybin (#9) again finding the back of the net, thanks to a great set up by Davy Armstrong (#6).

The Switchbacks FC kept up the offensive through the rest of the first half, taking it into halftime with a score of Switchbacks 2: Harpo's FC 0.

The second half started a bit slower, and the Harpo's FC capitalized in the 49th minute as Kevin Haber (#26) got past the defense putting Harpo's FC on the board, thanks to an assist from Sawyer Frank (#21).

Then the cards started coming out. Harpo's FC's Corey Cullen (#33) was given a yellow card in the 69th minute. Then two yellows against the Switchbacks FC's Rony Argueta (#8) took him out of the match with a red card in the 76th minute. The Switchbacks FC held on for the win, despite being down a man.

"It was a game of two halves," said Switchbacks FC's Marty Maybin. "We played better in the first half, fought better in the second half and got a great team result."

Harpo's FC is a pub club from Boulder, that beat Brigham Young University to get to this round of the U.S. Open Cup.

The Switchbacks FC will now head to Salt Lake City on Wednesday to play the Real Monarchs for the third round of the U.S. Open Cup. Real Monarchs SLC beat the Long Island Rough Riders tonight, winning their second-round match.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is seen as U.S. Soccer's National Club Championship. It is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams that are affiliated with U.S. Soccer, and dates back to 1914.
