Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

PEORIA - Ill. - The Kernels held Peoria to one hit in an 8-0 pounding of the Chiefs on Wednesday night. Stephen Gonsalves led the way by striking out seven over six innings, allowing the only hit in the first inning. Cedar Rapids collected 12 hits to outhit the Chiefs 12-1. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak.

Gonsalves (4-1) was terrific on the hill for the victory by going six scoreless innings. It was his second start where the southpaw allowed only one hit in at least six innings pitched. He also issued just one hit to the Timber Rattlers at Wisconsin on April 23 over seven innings. Against Peoria on Wednesday, Gonsalves struck out seven and walked three while hitting one batter. Collin Radack singled in the first inning for Peoria's only hit of the night.

Michael Cederoth made his first relief appearance for the Kernels and went two perfect innings, striking out three. Zack Tillery struck out one in a perfect ninth inning to close out the win.

The one-hitter came two nights after Peoria's Austin Gomber allowed a single hit to the Kernels in a seven-inning shutout on Monday. Wednesday's victory prevented a season-worst four-game losing streak.

Brett Doe recorded his first three-hit game for Cedar Rapids as the catcher went 3-for-5 with one run batted in. Zack Larson and Blake Schmit both collected two hits and two runs batted in. Trey Vavra and Pat Kelly also had two hits each.

The Kernels took a 1-0 lead in the second inning with their first hit of the night. Doe's RBI single to left-center field with two outs scored T.J. White, who walked and stole second base to get into scoring position.

White scored again with two outs in the fourth inning as the Kernels moved ahead 2-0. Schmit's two-out RBI double hopped up against the wall in left and brought in White, who drew his second walk to begin the inning.

Larson came through with two outs in the fifth inning with a RBI double that scored Vavra to put Cedar Rapids up 3-0. With two down in the inning, Larson's double was pulled down the left field line. Vavra collected his second hit of the night to get on base when he singled to right with one out.

The Kernels scored in their third straight inning as they made the score 4-0 in the sixth inning. Consecutive singles by Kelly and Doe put runners at first and second. With one out, a fielding error by Peoria second baseman Andrew Sohn allowed Kelly to score and Tanner English to reach as the Kernels took a four-run lead.

In the eighth inning the Kernels broke the game open by sending nine men to the plate and doubling their lead to 8-0 with a four-run frame. Two more Peoria miscues assisted in the big inning. Kelly began the inning with a single, his second hit of the night. A wild pickoff attempt by Peoria catcher Luis Cruz sailed into the right field corner and allowed Kelly to reach third base. Kelly scored and made the score 5-0 on Schmit's RBI single up the middle, Schmit's second run-scoring hit of the evening. Tanner English singled, and Vavra walked to load the bases. A fielding error by Peoria shortstop Oscar Mercado scored Schmit and English. Larson's second run-scoring hit of the night followed the error as his RBI single plated Vavra to push the Kernels lead to eight runs.

Kyle Lomascolo (0-1) made a surprise spot start and took the loss over 3 2/3 innings. The left-hander quickly warmed up after scheduled starter Dewin Perez was scratched after warming up in the bullpen moments before first pitch. Lomascolo allowed two runs on three hits while striking out seven and walking four. Five total pitchers took the mound on the night for the Chiefs. Luis Cruz moved from catcher to pitcher and threw a scoreless ninth inning. Peoria's pitchers combined to strike out 14 Kernels while Peoria struck out 11 times. The Chiefs committed three errors.

The series at Peoria concludes on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. RHP Felix Jorge (1-2, 1.98) gets the start for the Kernels against Peoria's RHP Matt Pearce (3-2, 2.12).
