Long Island Ducks News Release
(Port Jefferson, N.Y., May 19, 2015) - On Tuesday morning, the Long Island Ducks completed their annual TD Bank "Take a Duck to Class" essay contest visits by attending Edna Louise Spear Elementary School. Fourth grader Amy Whitney was the fourth and final student this year to win an hour-long visit from the Ducks after submitting an essay about "Who is a hero in your community and why?"
The day started with an assembly for the entire fourth grade class, which featured nearly 100 students. The Ducks congratulated Amy on being one of this year's winners and explained why her essay stood out from the record number received from students across Long Island. The lucky winner then read her essay aloud and received a long ovation from her classmates and teachers in attendance.
Amy's hero and the subject of her essay was her cousin, Justin Vogt, a United States Marine. Justin is currently stationed in California and has traveled overseas to places such as Japan to serve and protect our country. His job as a Marine keeps him away from his wife and son often, but always returns home to attend a Fourth of July celebration with his relatives, including Amy.
TD Bank Vice President of U.S. Field Marketing Eric Fishon and East Islip Branch Assistant Manager Stephanie Polidoro then presented Amy with a $50 Visa Gift Card for being one of this year's winners. Long Island's Favorite Mascot, QuackerJack, joined in and greeted all of the students and teachers. QJ even got to show off his dance moves for the crowd!
Following the assembly, Amy and her classmates received a special autograph session with QuackerJack and got to take pictures with the lovable mascot as well. Each of the students in her class received a gift bag full of goodies, courtesy of TD Bank and the Ducks.
Contestants were able fill out applications available at LIDucks.com last fall and submit an essay of 250 words or less on "Who is a hero in your community and why?" Out of a record number of essays received from all over Long Island, four lucky winners were selected. Each one received an hour-long visit to their school from Long Island's most popular mascot, QuackerJack, along with a Visa gift card from TD Bank. Be sure to check the Ducks website next fall when the applications will become available again!
