Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Greg Garcia hammered a walkoff RBI single off of Omaha first baseman Cheslor Cuthbert that gave the Memphis Redbirds a 3-2 win over the Storm Chasers in the finale of a five-game series on Tuesday at AutoZone Park.
With the win, Memphis took four of five from Omaha this series and improved to 17-23 overall this season. The walkoff win was also the club's fourth last-bat win of the season, all in the month of May. Redbirds pitching limited Omaha to only six runs over the five-game stretch.
Redbirds starter Marco Gonzales allowed one run on five hits over six innings of work for a no-decision. The left-handed also struck out seven and walked two.
Memphis cashed in a walk to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by a Dean Anna sacrifice fly with the bases loaded. Anna lined a laser to the center field wall, but Omaha's Brett Eibner made an outstanding catch that stranded two runs.
Two innings later, Storm Chasers designated hitter Jose Martinez knotted the game at 1-1 with a solo homer to left off Gonzales, his fourth of the season.
Both teams traded runs in the eighth, beginning with the Storm Chasers scoring on a costly Redbirds fielding error. In the next frame after Louis Coleman intentionally walked Anna, Ed Easley delivered a clutch two-out, game-tying RBI single to center that scored Mike O'Neill.
Keith Butler (1-2) threw a scoreless ninth for his first win of the year.
After a scheduled league-wide off day on Wednesday, the Redbirds travel west for eight games to face the Sacramento River Cats (Triple-A Giants) and Fresno Grizzlies (Triple-A Astros). In his first start since being optioned by St. Louis, left-hander Tyler Lyons (2-1, 2.91) will toe the rubber in Thursday's 9:05 pm CT series opener at Raley Field. He will be opposed by right-hander Robert Coello (5-1, 3.47).
