Real Monarchs Kick off Inaugural U.S. Open Cup Run on Wednesday
May 19, 2015 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Real Monarchs News Release
SANDY, Utah (Tuesday, May 19, 2015) - Real Monarchs SLC landed in New York this morning, as preparations have begun for the USL expansion club's inaugural U.S. Open Cup campaign, kicking off Wednesday night at the Long Island Rough Riders (PDL). Monarchs match at Long Island is set to kickoff at 6:00 p.m. MT.
The Monarchs are just one of 21 U.S.-based USL teams who join the nation's oldest continuously-running tournament at the second round stage. Head Coach Freddy Juarez' team join the 102-year old tourney days removed from a 1-1 home draw against Portland Timbers 2 Saturday night. The Monarchs appear to be gaining momentum fewer than 10 games into its inaugural year, but have developed a penchant for conceding late goals.
Head Coach Freddy Juarez addressed the issue Saturday night post-game. "Do we need to learn how to close out matches? We do, but that comes with young age." Juarez is confident that more results will come as players like FW Emery Welshman, FW Max Rauhofer, MF Ricardo Velazco, MF Fito Ovalle and MF Lucas Baldin gain the cohesion that comes with more minutes together.
The PDL Long Island Rough Riders have won three matches in-a-row across league and Open Cup competition, including a 3-1 home win last Wednesday over the Brooklyn Italians (NPSL), earning the right to host the Monarchs. The Rough Riders (2-0-0, six points) currently sit atop the Mid-Atlantic Division of the Premier Development League.
Rough Riders GM Flavio Ferri: "We are looking forward to the opportunity to match up against a [USL] side in a competition as prestigious as the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Despite coming into the game as underdogs, I am confident that we will put in a strong performance and be worthy opponents for the Monarchs SLC."
