Giants Begin Three-Game Series Against Modesto Tonight The San Jose Giants begin a seven-game homestand this evening with the first of three straight contests against the Modesto Nuts at Municipal Stadium. Keury Mella is slated to make the start on the mound for the Giants tonight. Mella faced Modesto in his most recent start on May 13 and picked-up the win after tossing six innings with just two unearned runs allowed. After the current series versus the Nuts, San Jose continues their homestand with a four-game set against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes beginning on Friday.

Road Trip Review The Giants posted a 2-5 record during their seven-game road trip that concluded yesterday. San Jose dropped two out of three games in Modesto to begin the trip. All three games of the series were decided by one or two runs. The Giants then picked-up just one victory during a four-game series against the first-place Visalia Rawhide. San Jose's lone triumph versus the Rawhide was a 5-4, 11-inning win last Saturday. The Giants have now dropped 14 out of their last 18 road games and have yet to win a series away from Municipal Stadium this season.

Close Calls 10 out of San Jose's 26 losses this season have come by one run (38.4%). The Giants are 3-10 in one-run contests and 4-16 in games decided by one or two runs this year. 13 out of San Jose's last 16 games have been one or two-run contests.

Lost 18 Of 24 Since sweeping a three-game series against Inland Empire from April 20-22 that improved the Giants record to 6-8, San Jose has dropped 18 out of 24 games. San Jose has endured losing streaks of five games (April 28-May 2) and four games (May 4-7) and has won back-to-back contests only once during the stretch (May 8-9).

Cole's Offensive Surge Second baseman/outfielder Hunter Cole is 15-for-36 (.417) with five doubles, a triple and six RBI's in his last 10 games. Cole has hit safely in six straight games. Cole is batting .330 with seven doubles, two triples, no home runs and 11 RBI's in 24 games overall with San Jose. He's sixth in the league in batting average. Cole joined the Giants on April 22 after beginning the season with Class-A Augusta (.275 AVG in 10 games.

Trouble In The Field The Giants have committed a league-high 52 errors this season. The 37 unearned runs allowed by San Jose this year are second-most in the league.

Black, Rogers Bolster Bullpen The Giants added relief pitchers Ray Black (from Extended Spring Training) and Tyler Rogers (from Double-A Richmond) to their bullpen last Saturday. Black, a member of San Francisco's 40-man roster, was recovering from a strained lat muscle injury. In 37 games between Augusta (Class-A) and San Jose last season, Black posted a 3.57 ERA and had 71 strikeouts over 35 1/3 innings. Black is rated as having the "best fastball" in the entire San Francisco Giants farm system by Baseball America. Rogers appeared in 10 games for Richmond this year and was 0-1 with a 5.91 ERA. He recorded 15 strikeouts in 10 2/3 innings. Last season, Rogers posted a 2.00 ERA in 47 appearances out of the Giants bullpen and allowed just one earned run over his last 25 2/3 innings of the year.

At Muni The Giants own a 6-11 record at Municipal Stadium this season - tied for the worst home mark in the league (Bakersfield). San Jose did win two out of three games from the visiting Stockton Ports in their most recent home series (May 8-10) - the Giants' only series win thus far in May. San Jose is batting .278 as a team to go with a 3.04 ERA at home this season (.236 AVG, 4.54 ERA on the road).

Slater Sizzling Infielder Austin Slater is 7-for-15 (.467) with two doubles and an RBI over his last three games to raise his season batting average to .320 - seventh in the league. Slater leads the Giants in doubles (10) and is second in RBI's (18).

Opponent Notes: Modesto Nuts The Modesto Nuts, an affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, are in second place in the North Division with a 20-18 record. Modesto is 12-5 in May after going just 8-13 in April. The Nuts rank fifth in the league in batting average (.262) and sixth in ERA (4.09). Modesto is 10-11 on the road this season (10-7 at home).
