Iowa Sneaks Past Oklahoma City for 3-2 Win

OKLAHOMA CITY (May 18, 2015) - Iowa manufactured a run in the seventh inning that proved the be the difference as the Cubs (19-19) downed the Oklahoma City Dodgers (26-12) 3-2 in Pacific Coast League action Monday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
Tied 2-2 in the seventh, Taylor Davis led off the inning with a double, his fifth in the last two days. Rubi Silva then sacrificed him to second. Two batters later, Arismendy Alcantara smacked an RBI-single to give Iowa the lead for good.
Iowa got on the board first with two runs in top of the first inning. With one out, Matt Szczur and Javy Baez notched consecutive singles off Dodgers starter Zach Lee (4-3). Szczur then advanced to third on a Christian Villanueva fly out. With Mike Baxter batting, Baez and Szczur successfully executed a double-steal to draw first blood. Baxter then followed with an RBI-single to drive in Baez to make it 2-0.
Oklahoma City struck back with two runs in middle innings off Iowa starter Donn Roach (5-0). Darnell Sweeney notched a two-out RBI-single in the fifth, followed by a Chris Heisey solo home run in the sixth. It was just the second home run allowed by Roach this season.
Roach allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits with two strikeouts over 6.0 innings to earn the win. It was the seventh consecutive quality start for the right-hander. He lowered his ERA to a sterling 1.97 for the season. Right-hander Gonzalez Germen, left-hander Drake Britton and righty Blake Cooper combined to toss three scoreless innings to preserve the win. Cooper nailed down his second save of the season.
Lee allowed three runs on 11 hits with five strikeouts in 6.2 innings to suffer the loss.
Szczur led Iowa with a 4-for-4 night and a run scored. Davis stayed hot, going 3-for-4 with two doubles. John Andreoli added a two-hit night.
Darnell Sweeney paced the Dodgers offensively with a two-hit night. Brian Burgamy got on base three times thanks to a single and two walks and scored a run.
Iowa and Oklahoma City will play the finale of a four-game series tomorrow at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. CT. The game can be heard live on AM 940, 104.5 FM, and live-streamed at Iowacubs.com. The On-Deck Circle Pre-game Show will begin 6:40 p.m. CT.
