MLL Names Week 6 Players of the Week

May 18, 2015 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) News Release

BOSTON (May 18th, 2015) - Major League Lacrosse, the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league completed Week 6 of its 2015 season this past weekend. All eight teams participated, splitting the weekend with three games on Saturday evening, and one game on Sunday night. One team continued on their unbeaten streak and another team reached their 100th win in their organization's history.

The Chesapeake Bayhawks came close to ending the New York Lizards' perfect season on Saturday night but fell short in the end, losing 15-14. This win for the Lizards marks their sixth of the season. The first quarter proved to be a slow one, with only three goals total; two from New York's Matt Gibson and a lone goal from Jack Rice of the Bayhawks. The Lizards opened up the second quarter with three unanswered goals from Mike Stone, Matt Poskay, and Tommy Palasek before the Bayhawks were able to answer. Ben Hunt, midfielder for the Bayhawks, dominated the third quarter netting four goals, one of which was a two pointer. Even with Hunt leading the Bayhawks' comeback in the second half and the team out-scoring the Lizards 10-8, they were unable to overcome Greg Gurenlian, who won 28 of 32 at the "X". Rob Pannell led the Lizards with four goals and two assists while Stone added three goals and one assist. Tyler Fiorito had 16 saves for the Bayhawks and remains one of the top goalkeepers in the league, but he was unable to get the win.

The Denver Outlaws traveled to Florida on Saturday night and subsequently handed the Launch their fourth loss of the season, winning 15-12. John Grant Jr., Attack for the Outlaws, made his 2015 season debut and led the team to victory with two goals and two assists. Eric Law completed a hat trick in the first half to help put the Outlaws ahead 11-4 going into the third. Denver Midfielder, Jeremy Sieverts, added a hat trick of his own to the mix while Drew Snider and Grant contributed two apiece. Anthony Kelly took control at the face-off for Denver with 14 wins on 29 attempts. Despite the loss, Florida came back with a vengeance in the second half, outscoring Denver 8-4 to put the final score at 15-12. Roman Lao-Gosney and Casey Powell each had hat tricks on the night for the Launch. Charlie Cipriano and Adam Fullerton split time in goal for the Launch; Cipriano ended the night with seven saves and eight goals against while Fullerton came away with 11 saves and six goals against.

The Ohio Machine looked to bounce back after a loss at home with a win against the Charlotte Hounds on Saturday evening and they accomplished just that with a 14-10 win. A strong offensive performance from Marcus Holman solidified the win for Ohio, as he finished the evening with six goals. The Machine received help from midfielders Kyle Harrison and Kevin Cooper as well; both players each recorded two goals on the night. Brian Phipps protected the net for Ohio with twenty-one saves. Although the Hounds were able to tie the game up multiple times in the first quarter, the Machine eventually got away from them, leading 8-4 going into the third and the Hounds were unable to catch up. The Hounds had a balanced scoring effort in the loss; John Haus and Mike Sawyer each had two goals and six other players found the back of the net.

Coming off of a difficult Week 5 win, the Rochester Rattlers traveled to Foxboro, MA on Sunday in hopes of taking down the Boston Cannons on Military Appreciation Night. The Cannons had other plans as they earned their 100th win in team history with a 17-16 overtime victory led by Will Manny. Manny had a five-goal, nine-point performance on Attack for the Cannons, including the game winner. The Rattlers led most of the game but a late second half push from Boston seemed to be enough for the Cannons to take the lead and come out with the win. Boston Cannon's Craig Bunker scooped up eleven ground balls, while teammate Scott Ratliff picked up ten. The Rattlers spread out their goal scoring; Jeremy Boltus, Jordan MacIntosh, and Jordan Wolf each had four goals. The goalkeepers for each team played a fairly even game with Boston's Jordan Burke saving 13 of 29 shots on goal, and Rochester's John Galloway saving 10 out of 27 shots on goal. The Boston Cannons concluded their special evening by retiring Ryan Boyle's #14 jersey, which is the first jersey to be retired in Major League Lacrosse history. Boyle was an integral part of Boston's 2011 MLL Championship team and is currently first in league history for assists and third all-time for points.
