Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA - Rancho Cucamonga stretched its winning streak to a season-high seven games and improved to ten games over .500, edging Lake Elsinore 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at LoanMart Field.
Trailing 1-0 in the fifth inning, the Quakes (23-13) rallied against Storm starter Kyle Lloyd (1-1). Brandon Trinkwon and Webster Rivas singled to start the inning. Paul Hoenecke walked to load the bases. Tyler Ogle's walk forced in a run to tie the game. Joey Curletta's RBI groundout chased Rivas home to give Rancho Cucamonga the lead. With runners at second and third, Rob Garvey's safety squeeze turned into a bunt single, plating Hoenecke for a 3-1 Quakes' advantage.
Rancho Cucamonga added an important insurance run in the eighth against Lake Elsinore reliever Eric Yardley. Cody Bellinger extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a leadoff double, then moved to third as Bousfield booted the ball in center field. Trinkwon brought Bellinger home with an RBI groundout, giving the Quakes a 4-1 edge.
Lake Elsinore (16-20) made a frantic push to tie the game in the ninth inning against Quakes' closer Dan Tillman. Gabriel Quintana rocketed a double off the left field fence to open the frame. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Quintana trotted home on Adolfo Reina's sacrifice fly to deep center. Yale Rosen launched a solo homer that clipped the bottom of the right-center field scoreboard, cutting the deficit to 4-3. With two outs, Auston Bousfield's pop-up resulted in a fantastic catch by Trinkwon at second base to secure the Quakes' win and Tillman's third save of the season.
The Storm got off to an early start against Rancho Cucamonga starter Jose De Leon (4-1). Bousfield walked and scored on Marcus Davis' double to center field, giving Lake Elsinore a 1-0 lead.
De Leon settled down afterward, pitching five and two-third innings while allowing one run, five hits and two walks. The right-hander finished with eight strikeouts, raising his California League-leading total to 58 this season.
With the win, the Quakes improve to 14-5 at home this season and remain unbeaten against Lake Elsinore at LoanMart Field, capturing all six meetings between the clubs in Rancho Cucamonga.
The Quakes will go for a four-game series sweep over the Storm on Monday night. Right-hander Johnathan Richy (4-1, 4.29 ERA) will get the ball for Rancho Cucamonga, while Lake Elsinore counters with righty Matthew Shepherd (0-1, 8.27 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
