Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. -- Starting pitcher Justin Germano headlined for the Tacoma Rainiers in a 4-0 shutout win over the Las Vegas 51s at Cheney Stadium on Sunday.
Germano (3-1) limited the 51s to six hits and struck out five without issuing a walk in the Rainiers first shutout victory over Las Vegas since June 27, 2013. Through four starts with Tacoma this season, the right-hander has surrendered just four runs in 22.1 innings pitched.
Relievers Lucas Luetge and Mayckol Guaipe sealed the win after striking out two in 3.0 combined perfect innings of work out of the bullpen.
Shawn O'Malley got things started for Tacoma at the plate, delivering a two-out RBI single in the second inning that gave the Rainiers an early 1-0 lead. Ketel Marte expanded that lead to 2-0 after belting a solo home run in the third - his first homer since August 21 of last season.
Marte upped Tacoma's advantage to 3-0 in the seventh with an RBI ground out that plated O'Malley. A fourth and final run was tallied when a throwing error cleared the way for Austin Jackson to score on the same play.
The Rainiers collected a total of nine hits against the 51s, led by a 3-for-4 effort from the infielder O'Malley. Patrick Kivlehan collected the team's only other multi-hit outing after going 2-for-4 with a double. In the second game of his rehab stint with Tacoma, outfielder Austin Jackson went 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
The Rainiers (16-22) host the third game of the team's four-game series with Las Vegas (25-13) at 6:05 p.m. tomorrow, May 18. Right-hander Sam Gaviglio (2-3, 5.09) is expected to start for Tacoma in the contest. Left-hander Darin Gorsky is slated to start for the 51s.
