Power Slip to Hagerstown

(Hagerstown, MD- May 17, 2015) - The West Virginia Power lost to the Hagerstown Suns 5-4 in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown. Austin Coley struggled in his first start against the Suns this season and was saddled with his second loss of the year.

The Power gave Coley an early lead thanks to a two-run second. Tito Polo hit a fielder's choice, then scored when Chase Simpson hit a triple to right center. Simpson scored a batter latter on an Elvis Escobar sacrifice fly.

Hagerstown responded with a two-run second to tie the game. Grant DeBruin hit a double off the top of the left field wall and advanced to third on a Jeff Gardner single to right. With two outs, Cody Dent pulled a two-run double to right field to even the score.

In the fourth the Suns took the lead. Jose Marmolejos and DeBruin hit a single and double, respectively, to begin the inning. Gardner lined a sacrifice fly to right to score Marmolejos and Brennan Middleton pulled a double to left field which scored DeBruin to give Hagerstown a 4-2 advantage.

West Virginia sent seven men to the dish in the fifth to tie the game at four. Simpson led off the inning with a walk and Escobar reached on a bunt single. Kawika Emsley-Pai tallied his second hit of the series with a single to right center which scored Simpson and advanced Escobar to third. Four batters later, Escobar scored on a wild pitch to even the game.

The Suns reclaimed the lead in the sixth. Coley issued his first walk of the outing to Dale Carey and he advanced to second on a groundout. Carey scored when Jeff Gardner hit a single that stayed in the infield.

Coley (5-2) suffered the loss after he allowed five runs on six hits over 5.2 innings with a walk and four strikeouts. Luis Reyes (1-2) went six innings to earn the win while Robert Orlan earned his fourth save of the year.

The Power (20-16) dropped three of the five games to the Suns (17-19) and won't see them again until the second half of the season.

The Power continue their road trip with a three-game series against the Hickory Crawdads in North Carolina beginning on Monday night. West Virginia will send LHP John Sever (1-1, 3.00) and will square off against RHP Nick Gardewine (2-2, 2.82). First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. while pregame on the Power baseball network is slated for 5:45 p.m.

West Virginia returns home on Thursday, May 21 for a four-game series against the Delmarva Shorebirds. Thursday's game will be a Thirsty Thursday presented by 96.1 The Wolf with $1 12 oz. drafts and $2 16 oz. cans. Also highlighting the four-game homestand is Redneck Night IV with a Camo Hat Giveaway to the first 1,000 fans. The award-winning promotion will also feature Redneck Idol, an appearance by History Channel's Appalachian Outlaws, and a pregame and postgame concert by the Davisson Brothers Band.
