Las Vegas Evades Rainiers in Series Opener, 6-3

TACOMA, Wash. -- The Tacoma Rainiers let a late lead slip away in a 6-3 extra-innings loss to the Las Vegas 51s at Cheney Stadium on Saturday night.

Tacoma held a 3-2 advantage in the ninth before 51s third baseman Danny Muno drove in the tying run with a one-out double to right field. Las Vegas later took control for good after posting a three-run inning in the 10th. Cory Vaughn and Brandon Allen hit back-to-back RBI singles to put the 51s up two, and Travis Taijeron topped off the frame with an RBI ground out.

Stefen Romero originally put the Rainiers ahead 2-0 when he belted a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning - the outfielder's team-leading eighth this season. After the 51s tied the score at 2-2 in the top of the fourth, Romero gave Tacoma the edge again in the bottom of the inning after scoring on Jesus Montero's sacrifice fly.

Tacoma combined to collect five hits in the team's series opener with Las Vegas. Along with Romero's 2-for-4, two RBI night, outfielder Austin Jackson recorded a pair of singles in the first game of his Major League rehab assignment with the Rainiers.

Reliever Dominic Leone surrendered four runs on six hits over the ninth and tenth innings and was dealt the loss. In his Triple-A debut, starter Stephen Landazuri limited Las Vegas to two runs on seven hits in 6.0 innings of work. The right-hander struck out three and issued one walk.

The Rainiers (15-22) host the second game of a four-game series with Las Vegas (24-12) tomorrow, May 17. Right-hander Justin Germano (2-1, 1.74) is expected to start for the Rainiers against 51s right-hander Matthew Bowman (2-3, 8.13) First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m.
