Memphis Redbirds News Release

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Tim Cooney fired 7 2/3 shutout innings of one-hit ball as the Memphis Redbirds blanked the visiting Omaha Storm Chasers, 5-0, on Saturday night at AutoZone Park in the opener of a five-game series.

Cooney's (2-3) only hit allowed on the evening was a one-out bloop single to Casey Kotchman with one out in the top of the seventh inning. Marcus Hatley hurled a perfect 1 1/3 scoreless frames in relief to preserve Memphis' 10th combined one-hitter in franchise history.

Cooney finished with two walks, a hit batter, and six strikeouts. Last season on May 29 vs. Iowa at AutoZone Park, Cooney fired a complete game one-hit shutout. His only blemish was a two-out single to Arismendy Alcantara in the top of the ninth.

Memphis jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Ed Easley went yard over left field wall. The homer was Easley's third of the season.

With the bases loaded in the fourth, the Redbirds added two more runs on Mike O'Neill's two-run single to center, plating Stephen Piscotty and Dan Johnson.

Johnson was responsible for the Redbirds' final two runs of the night on a fifth-inning sacrifice fly and his second home run of the season, a solo blast in the eighth that landed on the right field picnic pavilion.

The Redbirds and Storm Chasers continue their series on Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader consisting of a pair of seven-inning games. Left-hander John Gast (1-2, 4.97) will be face right-hander Yohan Pino (1-0, 0.00) in the first game. In the twinbill finale, Nick Greenwood (2-1, 10.53) will toe the rubber against former Redbird Clayton Mortenson (2-3, 7.23).

The Redbirds will be celebrating two for the doubleheader and offering two (2) tickets for the price of one, in addition to two (2) King Cotton Hot Dogs for the price of one. Twins will receive free admission with valid IDs. Fans will receive special prizes on Redbirds doubles and double plays turned throughout both games.

The first 2,500 kids ages 12 and under will receive a free ice cream treat before EACH game of the doubleheader, courtesy of Prairie Farms Dairy. Kids ages 12 and under get to take the field after the second game and run like the Redbirds. Gates open at 12:30pm.
