Myrtle Beach Wins Fourth Straight

May 16, 2015 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

ZEBULON, NC - The Mudcats tied the game on a ninth-inning home run from Jose Briceno, but the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, pulled away in the 12th inning to capture their fourth straight victory, winning 3-2 on Saturday night at Zebulon's Five County Stadium. Jeimer Candelario's extra-innings double, one of his three hits, put the Pelicans ahead for good.

Myrtle Beach (22-12) nearly won it in regulation. Ahead 2-1, the Pelicans sent Zach Cates to the mound to try and close it out in the ninth. One pitch later, however, the game was tied, as Briceno blasted his first home run of the year over the left field fence.

The home run erased a 2-1 lead that the Pelicans had held since the fourth inning. Down 1-0, the Pelicans plated two in the fourth to pull ahead. Candelario singled to lead off the frame against Brandon Barker in his Carolina League debut, and Ben Carhart followed with a double. With two in scoring position, Trey Martin tied the game on a sacrifice fly, and with two outs, Carlos Penalver put the Birds up 2-1 on an RBI single.

Paul Blackburn settled in after allowing six runners in the first two innings to face the minimum over the final ten batters faced. Although he left in line for the win, the starter did not earn a decision, allowing just one run, earned, on four hits and a pair of walks. He struck out one in his five innings of work. Taylor Scott worked three scoreless innings with three strikeouts before turning over the game to Cates.

After allowing the game-tying homer, Cates finished off the ninth and worked a clean tenth. James Pugliese tossed a perfect 11th inning.

In the top of the 12th frame, Mark Zagunis opened the inning with a triple over Conner Oliver's head in deep right field, setting up the go-ahead double from Candelario.

Down to their final strike, Carolina collected a two-out single from Johan Camargo in the bottom of the 12th inning off of Pugliese. Kevin Curcio then singled to put at the corners, but Sean Godfrey bounced out to second to end the ballgame.

Pugliese (3-0) picked up the win, while Andy Otero (0-1), who threw the final two frames for the Mudcats, suffered the loss in his first decision.

The series concludes on Sunday at Five County Stadium, with the first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m. ET. In the series finale, the Pelicans turn to Tyler Skulina (1-2, 4.50). The Mudcats send Sean Furney (---, -.-- ERA) out in his Mudcats' debut.

The game can be heard live, presented by Courtyard Myrtle Beach at Barefoot Landing, on 1450 WRNN-AM ESPN Myrtle Beach, on the TuneIn Radio App, and via the MiLB First Pitch App, beginning with the Pregame Show at 1:40 p.m. ET.

The Pelicans are back home on Tuesday, May 19 when they open a seven-day homestand against the Frederick Keys and Potomac Nationals.
