Young Slugger Joins Club After Release from Cubs

WICHITA, KS (May 16, 2015) - Through five exhibition games the Wichita Wingnuts have come close, but not yet tallied a home run. Although this is far from alarming at this stage of the season, the team has added a potential power boost to their lineup with their latest acquisition. Today the club announced the signing of corner infielder Dustin Geiger and the release of Chris Garcia.
The 23-year old Geiger was recently released by the Chicago Cubs organization after playing in 13 games with Double-A Tennessee. He was originally drafted by the Cubs in 2010 as a 23rd round pick straight out of high school. His first full season in professional baseball got off to a hot start with Chicago's rookie affiliate in Arizona and earned him a quick promotion to Single-A Peoria, where he finished the year.
In 2012, he played all season long with Peoria. In just 75 games he managed to blast 17 home runs, hit 14 doubles, and drive in 53 runs. During the ensuing 2013 campaign, while suiting up for High-A Daytona in the pitcher-friendly Florida State League, Geiger managed to put up even bigger numbers. In 123 games with the Cubs he hit a career-best .281, once again launched 17 home runs, and drove in 86 runs. He also reached base at a career-high .365 clip.
The native of Merritt Island, Florida was promoted to Double-A Tennessee at the beginning of 2014 and spent the entire season with the Smokies. Geiger played in 124 games and ripped 12 home runs while racking up 47 RBI. He finished with a .223 average.
Garcia, who hadn't played baseball in two years, started the first four exhibition games at first base. He is now a free agent.
The Wingnuts and Joplin Blasters will meet in an exhibition game on Saturday night, at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. The 7:05 p.m. start will allow all fans general admission access for just $7. The eighth season of Wichita Wingnuts baseball begins on Thursday, May 21st in Joplin, with the home opener against the Winnipeg Goldeyes taking place on Tuesday, May 26th.
