Late Charge Falls Short for Second Straight Game

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Sounds outhit the Cubs for the second straight game and a late comeback fell short once again, as Iowa swiped another one-run contest from Nashville on Friday night at Principal Park, 6-5.

The Sounds dropped to a season-worst nine games below the .500 mark with the loss and are now 6-13 on the road. In addition, Nashville fell to 4-9 in one-run contests and were just 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position on the night.

Iowa took their third game of the series and had control of the contest from the beginning. John Andreoli led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run and scored in the third on a Christian Villanueva sacrifice fly. The Cubs then built off their 2-0 lead with four runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by a Rubi Silva two-run shot. The Cubs improved to 6-2 against the Sounds this season.

The two early runs came off Sounds' starter Arnold Leon, who was seeking his first win of 2015. The right-hander's pitch count got away from him and he managed just 5.0 innings of work. Leon allowed five hits with a pair of walks and five strikeouts. Run support for the 26-year old once again was an issue.

The Sounds did give their starter the lead with a run in the fourth and two in the fifth though. Kent Matthes put the visitors ahead in the fifth with a two-run double, but the advantage quickly evaporated during Iowa's four-run frame. Nashville put up a fight late, scoring one run in both the eighth and ninth innings, but left the bases loaded to end the game.

Ryan Roberts and Anthony Aliotti both ended up with three hits apiece, helping Nashville outhit Iowa 10-8. Roberts also worked two walks while the Sounds first baseman scored two runs, but Nashville left 10 runners on base and failed to capitalize on their chances.

The Sounds open up a four-game set tomorrow night against the New Orleans Zephyrs at First Tennessee Park. The Zephyrs took two of three from the Sounds earlier in the year. Left-hander Barry Zito (1-3, 4.70) will go against Andre Rienzo in the series opener.
