Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

ZEBULON, N.C. (MAY 15, 2015) - With hits in eight innings and at least one hit from each hitter in the lineup, the Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, clubbed their way to a 7-3 win over the Carolina Mudcats on Friday night at Five County Stadium. Duane Underwood Jr. impressed again as well, lowering his ERA 1.09 with five shutout innings. Mark Zagunis collected his first three-hit game, and Pin-Chieh Chen posted a three-hit night in his Pelicans debut.

The Pelicans (21-12) jumped on Carolina starter Yean Carlos Gil early and often on Friday night. They collected hits off of him in every inning, including multiple hits in three different frames. A four-hit second inning produced an early lead for the Pelicans. With two on, Chen tripled to deep right center field in a pair to give the Pelicans the lead. Zagunis added another on a single up the middle to put the Birds up 3-0.

Chen finished the night 3-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored, two runs knocked in a hit by pitch. Zagunis drove in a pair as well, going 3-for-5.

Gil was forced out of the game in the sixth, with his club still down 3-0, when the Pelicans loaded the bases against him with just one out. Justin Jackson then allowed all three inherited runners to score. Carlos Penalver brought in two runs with a double to left before Zagunis and Chesny Young each added another tally on a single and a sacrifice fly respectively.

In his first game as a Pelican, Young went 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Up 7-0, Myrtle Beach turned the game over to the bullpen. Underwood Jr. went the first five innings, allowing no runs on four singles. He didn't walk anyone and fanned three.

Juan Paniagua worked around a pair of singles in the sixth and a walk in the seventh to keep the Mudcats off the board.

Carolina (19-13) plated an unearned run off of Josh Conway in the eighth on a double from Sean Godfrey. The Mudcats added two more runs off of Jasvir Rakkar in the ninth, but Myrtle Beach held on for the 7-3 win.

Underwood Jr. improved to 4-0, taking the win. He is now tied for second in the league in wins and lowered his ERA to 1.09, which is second in the circuit and first among active pitchers. Gil (0-6) suffered the loss, his sixth in seven starts.

With a 1.5 game lead in the Southern Division, the Pelicans lock horns with the Mudcats again on Saturday at Five County Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. ET. The Pelicans send Paul Blackburn to the hill (2-2, 5.73), and the Hillcats send Brandon Barker (---, -.-- ERA) out in his High-A debut.

The game can be heard live, presented by Courtyard Myrtle Beach at Barefoot Landing, on 1450 WRNN-AM ESPN Myrtle Beach, on the TuneIn Radio App, and via the MiLB First Pitch App, beginning with the Pregame Show at 5:40 p.m. ET.

The Pelicans are back home on Tuesday, May 19 when they open a seven-day homestand against the Frederick Keys and Potomac Nationals.

The 2015 season marks the 17th season for the Pelicans franchise and first as the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. For information on tickets to see the Pelicans in 2015, please call (843) 918-6000, e-mail info@myrtlebeachpelicans.com, or visit www.MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
