Charleston Dirty Birds News Release

(Hagerstown, MD- May 15, 2015) - The West Virginia Power fell to the Hagerstown Suns 5-2 on Friday night at Municipal Stadium in Maryland. With the loss, the Power are now 5 1/2 games back of the Hickory Crawdads in the South Atlantic League's Northern Division standings.

West Virginia got off to a good start in the game on offense in the first. Cole Tucker led off the frame with a single and advanced to third when Connor Joe singled to right. With one out, Taylor Gushue hit a fly ball to center that was deep enough to bring home Tucker and it gave the Power a 1-0 lead.

The Power lead was relinquished after the Suns scored two in the first. With two outs, their rally began when Raudy Read hit a single to left and he advanced to second on a walk by Jose Marmolejos. Grand DeBruin singled to load the bases for Jeff Gardner, who hit a two-run single to gave Hagerstown the lead.

Hagerstown then scored a run in the second on a solo shot by Osvaldo Abreu and an RBI single in the third by Jeff Gardner to make it 4-1.

The Suns tallied their final run of the game in the seventh inning. Read brought home Osvaldo Abreu when he grounded a ball to Tucker whose throw to first was mishandled by Joe.

West Virginia attempted to rally in the ninth inning and scored a run on an Elvis Escobar RBI double. However, the Power couldn't muster anything else offensively and lost despite outhitting the Suns 10-7.

Alex McRae (2-3) suffered the loss for the Power after he surrendered four runs on seven hits over three innings of work. The Wisconsin native walked two and struck out two. In relief of McRae was Jake Burnette who put up one of the best outings of his career. The right hander went 4.2 innings of hitless ball and surrendered just one unearned run while striking out a career-best eight batters. Austen Williams (5-1) earned the victory while Drew Van Orden recorded the save.

The Power (19-15) continue their series with the Suns (16-18) on Saturday night at Municipal Stadium. West Virginia will toss RHP Colten Brewer (0-1, 7.20) and he will be opposed by a Hagerstown pitcher to be determined. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. while pregame on the Power radio network is slated for 6:45 p.m.
