(SAVANNAH, Ga.) Alfredo Escalera had two hits and two runs batted in, and the Lexington Legends stole eight bases on their way to a 5-2 win over Savannah Thursday night. Legends' starter Pedro Fernandez worked the first five innings and picked up his third win without a loss.

The Sand Gnats took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a leadoff walk to Luis Guillorme and a double by John Mora, but the Legends answered with two runs in the second. With two outs, Chase Vallot was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a double by Humberto Arteaga. Arteaga scored the go-ahead run on a base hit by Brandon Downes.

Each team scored a run in the fourth, leaving the Legends with a 3-2 lead.

Lexington's Kyle Pollock led off the seventh inning with a double. He advanced to third after Carlos Garcia's foul pop was caught by first baseman Stefan Sabol. Corey Toups was called out on strikes, but Escalera singled to left field, scoring Pollock and giving the Legends a 4-2 lead.

The Legends added a final run in the ninth. With one out, Garcia singled and moved to second on a single by Toups. A double steal put runners at second and third, and Escalera's single scored Garcia.

Garcia also stole two bases in the top of the fifth, and the three steals in the game gave him 21 for the year, third in the league behind Jorge Mateo of Charleston, who has 27, and Wes Rogers of Asheville, who has 24. Toups had two stolen bases for the Legends, who are third in the league in steals with 71, behind Asheville (76) and Charleston (73).

Fernandez allowed two hits and two earned runs in five innings. He walked three batters and struck out five. Ashton Goudeau and Matt Strahm each pitched two scoreless innings in relief. Strahm picked up his third save.

Savannah starter Brad Wieck (0-4), who pitched the first six and one-third innings, took the loss.

Game two of the four-game series will be played Friday night at Historic Grayson Stadium in Savannah. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
