Jupiter Hammerheads News Release

JUPITER, Fla. - The Jupiter Hammerheads dropped their second straight contest in the ninth inning to the Lakeland Tigers 2-0 at Roger Dean Stadium on Wednesday night. The Hammerheads managed to get only three hits and five baserunners in the shutout loss.

Strong pitching performances from both starting pitchers dominated the game on Wednesday night. Jarlin Garcia, Jupiter's starter, ran his pitch count high throwing 96 pitches in 5 2/3 innings pitched, but only allowed five hits and two walks with six strikeouts. Kevin Ziomek (4-3), Lakeland's starter, managed to just throw 91 pitches in eight shutout innings of three-hit baseball to pick up the victory. Ziomek also struck out eight Hammerheads without giving any free passes.

Neither team was able to break through until the top of the ninth inning when Lakeland (15-17) was able to add two runs. Francisco Martinez led the final frame off with a walk for the Flying Tigers. Jiwan James was able to move Martinez into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Curt Powell was then able to hit a triple into deep right-center field that would score Martinez to break the scoreless tie. Javier Betancourt picked up the second RBI of the night with a sacrifice fly to center field to give Lakeland a 2-0 advantage, which proved to be enough.

Jupiter (13-20) managed only three hits in the loss. Brian Anderson, Blake Barber and Yefri Perez each had a hit, while Perez also added a stolen base. The Hammerheads went 0-1 with runners in scoring position and only managed to leave two runners on the base path.

Matt Milroy entered in relief for Garcia and the Hammerheads. Milroy also had a great outing, going 2 1/3 innings with only two walks, a hit, and three strikeouts. Esmerling De La Rosa (0-3) took the loss for Jupiter. De La Rosa pitched the final inning and gave up two earned runs on one hit and one walk.

The Flying Tigers and Jupiter Hammerheads return to Roger Dean Stadium on Thursday morning for the series finale. Lakeland has taken two of the three games played in the series already. First pitch is slated for 10:35 a.m. on the first Education Day of the season. To purchase tickets, please call (561) 630-1828 or visit RogerDeanStadium.com.
