Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

FORT MYERS, Fla. (May 13, 2015) - Mitch Garver sent 1,561 screaming children back to school happy with a two-out, walk-off RBI single on Education Day and sending the Fort Myers Miracle to a 2-1 win over the Dunedin Blue Jays on Wednesday morning.

Chih-Wei Hu started for the Miracle and posted six shutout frames with six strikeouts. Hu lowered his earned run average to 1.03 for the season, but left a scoreless game in the sixth and received a no decision.

Luke Westphal entered out of the Miracle bullpen and surrendered the first run of the game in the top of the seventh. Derrick Loveless reached for the Blue Jays on an error by Tanner Vavra, then moved to second on a bouncing ball single through the right side. Ian Parmley laid down a sacrifice bunt to push both runners into scoring position. Westphal then issued Jorge Saez a walk to load the bases. After striking out Roeman Fields, Westphal failed to find the strike zone on four consecutive pitches and walked Dickie Joe Thon to force in a run, 1-0.

Hu's counterpart, Dunedin starter Luis Santos had faced just one over the minimum in six one-hit, shutout frames until the seventh. Vavra led off with a single, but was retired on a force play at second hit into by Alex Swim. Then, on a 3-2 pitch, Swim took off for second and Chad Christensen bounced a base hit through the right side to give the Miracle runners at first and third. Niko Goodrum hit a chopper to second base and was put out 4-3, but picked up an RBI as Swim raced home to tie the game, 1-1.

Ethan Mildren took over on the mound for the Miracle in the eighth and tossed two scoreless frames to set the stage for Garver in the ninth.

Blue Jays reliever Chad Girodo recorded the first out, but Christensen roped a base knock through the left side. Girodo rallied to strikeout Goodrum, but Christensen stole second. Garver worked a 2-2 count before leveling a liner into right center. With two outs, Christensen was moving on contact and beat Loveless' throw to start the celebration. The walk-off win was Fort Myers' fifth of the season and the Miracle now have 2-1 series advantage.

The series finale between the Miracle (16-17) and Blue Jays (14-19) is Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. Gates open at 6 p.m. for Thirsty Thursday with half priced domestic draft beers through the seventh inning. Ryan Eades (2-0) gets the start for the Miracle against Jeremy Gabryszwski (1-1) for Dunedin.
