Philadelphia Union News Release
Chester, Pa. (May 13, 2015) - Fernando Aristeguieta has been named to the preliminary roster for the Venezuelan National Team ahead of Copa America 2015, the Venezuelan Football Federation announced Tuesday. In doing so, the forward will miss the Union's upcoming match against D.C. United on Sunday.
The Venezuelan forward traveled to Isla de Margarita, Venezuela on Monday to join manager Noel Sanvicente's team for training at the Centro Nacional de Alto Rendimiento.
Copa America 2015 will take place from June 11 through July 4, 2015 in Chile. National teams from South America, Mexico and Jamaica will compete to become the continental champions and the highest-finishing South American team will earn a spot in the 2017 Confederations Cup held in Russia.
The action starts for the Venezuelan national team on Sunday, June 14 when they face neighboring country Colombia. In the 2011 Copa America, Venezuela finished in fourth place after suffering a 4-1 defeat to Peru in the third place match.
Aristeguieta has made 12 previous appearances and scored one goal for Venezuela. The goal came against El Salvador on Aug. 7, 2011 in Washington, D.C. Most recently, he made five appearances, including a start against Colombia on March 26, 2013 in Venezuela's 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign.
Aristeguieta joined the Philadelphia Union on loan from FC Nantes on Feb. 20, 2015 as a young designated player. Eleven games into the 2015 season the Venezuelan international has started nine matches and scored three goals.
The final 23-player roster is expected to be announced on May 23, 2015, ahead of the national team's trip to Argentina.
