Generals' Ken Appleby Named Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week

May 12, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL) News Release

Toronto, ON - The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Ken Appleby of the Oshawa Generals is the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week for the playoff week ending May 10 after posting a 2-0 record with a goals-against-average of 1.00 and save percentage of .962.

Appleby made 50 saves in two starts between the pipes backstopping the Generals to a 2-0 series lead against the Erie Otters in the Rogers OHL Championship Series for the Robertson Cup. Appleby's efforts helped limit the Otters' high-powered offense to single goal outputs for the first time in the post-season. He made 18 saves on Friday night in Game 1 as part of the Generals' 4-1 victory, then earned first star honours in Game 2 on Saturday with a 32-save performance in the 5-1 triumph for his fifth-straight playoff victory and league-high 14th win of the post-season. The Generals fell 4-3 to the Otters on Monday night in Game 3 but still lead the best-of-seven series 2-1 with Game 4 scheduled for Wednesday night in Erie.

Appleby, a 20-year-old from North Bay, ON, is playing in his third OHL season with the Generals. In 19 playoff games he carries a goals-against-average of 2.12 and save percentage .926 after leading the league with a franchise record 2.08 goals-against-average and a league-high save percentage of .924 during the regular season. His regular season record of 38-7-0-4 set a new club mark for wins in a season while tying for the league lead with six shutouts.

Also considered for the award this week was last week's recipient Montreal Canadiens prospect Zachary Fucale of the Quebec Remparts who posted a 2-1 record with a goals-against-average of 3.04 and save percentage of .913 in the first three games of the QMJHL Championship Series against the Rimouski Oceanic, and Jackson Whistle of the Kelowna Rockets who went 2-0 with a goals-against-average of 3.00 and save percentage of .913 in the first two games of the WHL Championship Series against the Brandon Wheat Kings. The Remparts currently lead the Oceanic 2-1 while the Rockets now lead the Wheat Kings 3-0 with Game 4 in each series scheduled for Wednesday night.
