Dynamo Spoils Toronto's Home Opener

May 10, 2015 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Houston Dynamo FC News Release

The Houston Dynamo dampened the celebrations on the reopening of renovated BMO Field with a 2-1 road win over Toronto FC on Sunday afternoon. Boniek Garcia and Will Bruin scored on each side of halftime as the Dynamo gained their first road win of the season and second straight win in Ontario in front of 30,226 in Toronto FC's home opener.

Next up, the Dynamo host the Portland Timbers on Saturday, May 16 at 7:30 p.m. CT at BBVA Compass Stadium.

Houston opened the game with energy and didn't play like the road team, with 10 corner kicks and eight shots - four on goal - in the first half. Houston also enjoyed 60 percent of possession in the first interval.

The Dynamo were rewarded shortly before halftime as Alexander Lopez slid a deft pass behind the defense in the path of DaMarcus Beasley, who was tackled in the box by former U.S. national team teammate Michael Bradley and referee Chris Penso awarded the Dynamo a penalty kick.

Boniek Garcia took the penalty and it was stopped by goalkeeper Chris Konopka but Garcia buried the rebound for a 1-0 lead and his first goal of the season a minute before halftime.

Houston doubled the margin in the 53rd minute on a spectacular counterattack. Giles Barnes collected the ball deep in his own half and burst past Bradley to cross midfield and dribble to the top of the box before splitting two defenders with a pinpoint pass in front of Bruin, who used one touch to beat Konopka from eight yards for his second goal of the season and a 2-0 advantage. Bruin is now tied with Brad Davis for second on Houston's all-time regular season scoring list.

Barnes nearly made it 3-0 ten minutes later, collecting a precise pass from Lopez outside the box and using the outside of his right foot from 25 yards to smash a curling shot off the crossbar.

Toronto FC pulled within a goal in the 77th minute as substitute midfielder Jonathan Osorio lofted a cross and Jozy Altidore rose to head inside the near post from six yards for his fifth goal of the year.

Houston repelled a TFC charge over the final 13 minutes, plus six additional minutes of extra time, to see out the victory.

Next game: Houston Dynamo vs. Portland Timbers - Saturday, May 16, 7:30 p.m. CT, BBVA Compass Stadium, Houston, Texas
