FRESNO, Calif. -- Stefen Romero homered and Jesus Montero collected two hits as the Tacoma Rainiers fell to the Fresno Grizzlies 3-2 at Chukchansi Park on Sunday.
After surrendering three runs in the bottom of the second inning, the Rainiers made the team's first appearance onto the scoreboard in the top of the fifth. Montero started the frame with a single and then scored on a sacrifice fly hit by infielder Shawn O'Malley.
Tacoma's only other run of the outing arrived in the top of the sixth inning when the outfielder Romero hit a two-out solo home run. Romero has now homered a team-best six times in 26 games with the Rainiers this season.
As a team, the Rainiers combined collect just six hits against the Grizzlies. Aside from Montero's 2-for-4 effort, catcher John Hicks delivered the club's only other multi-hit outing after going 2-for-4 with a double.
Infielder Ketel Marte ended the game 0-for-4, snapping his career-best hitting streak at 15 games. Since starting the streak on April 24, Marte had batted .422 (27x64) with five doubles and seven RBI. He leads the Rainiers with a .341 batting average through 31 games played this season.
Trey Cochran-Gill (0-1) was dealt a loss in his Triple-A debut after surrendering three unearned runs on three hits in 2.2 innings of work. The right-hander walked two and struck out three following a promotion from Advanced-A Bakersfield earlier in the morning.
Relievers Andrew Kittredge (3.1), Mayckol Guaipe (1.0), and Logan Bawcom (1.0) combined to hold the Grizzlies to three hits and walked five through 5.1 innings of action out of the bullpen.
The Rainiers (13-18) look to secure a series split in the final game of the team's four-game series at Fresno tomorrow, May 11. Right-hander Justin Germano (1-1, 1.50) is slated to start for Tacoma against Fresno's right-hander Dan Straily (2-2, 4.44). First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 p.m.
