Gonzalez Leads RubberDucks over Binghamton 9-4

Akron shortstop Erik Gonzalez had three hits and four RBI on Sunday afternoon as the RubberDucks snapped a six-game losing streak with a 9-4 victory over the Binghamton Mets at Canal Park.
Turning Point
Gonzalez belted a three-run double during a four-run sixth inning for the RubberDucks. His bases-clearing hit off B-Mets reliever Beck Wheeler made it 7-3, Akron. Gonzalez then came in to score on a single by the next hitter, Yandy Diaz, to make it 8-3.
Mound Presence
The B-Mets (18-12) scored a run to pull to within 9-4, and had the bases loaded with one out in the ninth, but right-hander Jeff Johnson came out of the bullpen to get the final two outs and record his third save. Akron starter Ryan Merritt (2-2) earned his second win of the season by working into the sixth inning, and holding the B-Mets to three runs on eight hits. He walked one and struck out two, and left after allowing back-to-back doubles to begin the sixth. Mets starter John Gant (1-3) took the loss.
Duck Tales
Gonzalez drove in a run with a single in the first inning, helping the RubberDucks (13-17) jump out to a 2-0 lead. He singled again in the third inning, and capped his day at the plate with his three-run double in the sixth. Gonzalez raised his team-high RBI total to 21 on the season. Diaz finished 2-4, with three RBI. Jordan Smith enjoyed a terrific series, going 6-10, against the B-Mets. He was 2-3, with a double, stolen base, two walks, and three runs scored on Sunday. Todd Hankins stroked a double to center field in the eighth to extend his hitting streak to a team-high, 13 games.
Notes
The win snapped Akron's six-game losing streak...Smith leads the EL in walks with 22...CF Tyler Naquin sat out his second straight game with a sore quad muscle...The RubberDucks improved to 8-8 at home...Time of game: 3:13...Attendance: 5,395.

The RubberDucks are in the midst of playing 14 of 17 games on the road. They open another seven-game road trip at Erie on Monday evening at 6:35.
