Erie Otters News Release

Oshawa, Ontario - After a deadlocked second period, the Otters fell 5-1 to Oshawa Saturday night in game two of the OHL Championship Series.

The Generals picked up where they left off last night, notching the first goal from Matt Mistele five and a half minutes in on the power play. Darren Raddysh tipped Michael Dal Colle, putting the Otters back on the penalty kill, but the Otters defense and Devin Williams came up big, shutting down a buzzing Oshawa power play.

At the other end of the ice, the Otters began to pressure goaltender Ken Appleby, getting to the net more than they had done in game one. With the Otters on a power play, Williams made a huge save on Dakota Mermis before Appleby robbed Remi Elie. With about five minutes to play in the period, Nick Betz carried the puck out from the boards unopposed and was able to beat Appleby, putting the Otters on the board.

The second period was full of chances for both teams with the netminders making the difference. The Otters continued to pressure Oshawa, but Appleby stopped Nick Baptiste, Connor McDavid and Jake Marchment to keep the game tied. Dylan Strome put a shot on Appleby with the period winding down at the end of a four-on-four, but the Generals netminder made the save. With Hunter Smith in the box for tripping Alex DeBrincat, the Otters put a flurry of activity on Appleby, applying heavy pressure in the Generals end, but the second period ended with the same score it started with.

DeBrincat looked like he had the go-ahead goal on his stick to start the third, but the puck was grabbed by Appleby, robbing the Otters rookie. The Generals killed the remainder of the power play, but went right back to being a man down with Stephen Desrocher sent off for delay of game. The Otters continued to cycle and pressure Oshawa, but Appleby continued to stand in the way.

The Otters had another chance on the power play, but after killing the penalty, the Generals carried the puck back in the other way and Anthony Cirelli knocked a rebound behind Williams to put the Generals ahead 2-1 with 7:43 to go. Just over a minute later, Tobias Lindberg gave the Generals a 3-1 lead with a breakaway goal. A two-on-one opportunity for Cole Cassels gave the Generals a 4-1 lead before Mistele's one-timer on the power play put Oshawa up 5-1 to close out game two.

McDavid's 16-game point streak came to an end with the Generals holding the Otters captain off the scoresheet for the first time in the 2015 playoffs. The teams deadlocked in shots 33-33.

The Otters head home for games three and four Monday and Wednesday at 7:35 p.m. at Erie Insurance Arena.
