SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs community initiative, Chiefs Care, recently presented the Susan G. Komen Eastern Washington Affiliate with a check for $13,000 in the effort to support the Spokane community, particularly those affected by breast cancer. Funds were raised throughout the 2014-15 regular season, culminating on Mike's Hard Pink Lemonade Breast Cancer Awareness Night and Helmet Giveaway on February 28 as the Chiefs hosted the rival Tri-City Americans at Spokane Arena.

The donation will assist in the Komen mission "to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering others, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures," said Susan G. Komen Eastern Washington Events and Communications Manager Caley Murphy.

"Through annual events, such as the Spokane Chiefs Breast Cancer Awareness Night, Komen Eastern Washington raises funds that enable women and men to detect and survive breast cancer.

"Seventy-five percent of all funds raised by (the Eastern Washington Affiliate) stay in our service area to fund breast health programs for women and men who would not otherwise have access to screening and treatment. Twenty-five percent of funds raised supports the Susan G. Komen Grants program for innovative research."

Funds were raised primarily through the sales of special edition breast cancer awareness t-shirts and hats, as well as the auction of unique pink-accented Chiefs jerseys worn by players during the February 28 game. The organization also auctioned off special superhero capes worn by Chiefs players during warm-ups and a one-of-a-kind painted goaltender mask.

"Our organization has always felt it is important to give back to the community that supports us," said Chiefs' Vice President of Sponsorships Jay Stewart. "We're proud to partner with Susan G. Komen and excited that we are able to make a donation that will help so many people in the Spokane area."

Ticket packages for the 2015-16 regular season are available now and start under $100. Visit the Chiefs' Ticket Office in-person on the southeast corner of Spokane Arena or call (509) 535-PUCK for more information.
