Tacoma Rainiers News Release
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The Tacoma Rainiers dropped the final two games of a four-game series with the Salt Lake Bees Thursday night - the two clubs split the series 2-2.
Rainiers infielder Ketel Marte went a combined 5-for-8 in the two games, extending his team-leading hitting streak to 13 games.
The first game of the evening was a resumption of Wednesday night's suspended game, and picked up action in the bottom of the fifth inning tied 2-2.
Prior to suspending the game, Tacoma starting pitcher Justin Germano tossed 4.0 innings, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out two. Salt Lake starting pitcher Andrew Heaney surrendered 10 hits, but held the Tacoma offense to just two runs (one earned).
Salt Lake scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning off Rainiers reliever Cam Hobson on back-to-back RBI singles from Roger Kieschnick and Alfredo Marte. Jett Bandy's three-run home run cleared the bases and gave the Bees a 7-2 lead they would not surrender.
The Bees tacked on one more run in the sixth and a trio of runs in the eighth inning to push their lead to 11-2 heading into the final frame.
Tacoma responded with a rally in the top of the ninth inning, scoring a pair of runs behind an RBI single from Marte and an RBI groundout from Patrick Kivlehan.
The runs were not enough to overcome the large deficit, and the Rainiers fell 11-4.
The top five members of the Rainiers starting lineup went a combined 12-for-24 with three runs and three RBI, while the bottom four in the lineup went 3-for-18 with one run and one RBI.
In the regularly scheduled game later in the night, the Bees jumped on the scoreboard early and held on to their lead to record a 10-3 victory.
Bees starting pitcher Zach Stewart went 4.0 innings in his third start of the year, holding Tacoma scoreless on just five hits.
Marc Krauss' two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning gave Salt Lake a quick 2-0 lead.
A seven run outburst from the Salt Lake offense in the bottom of the third inning gave the Bees a 9-0 cushion and one final run in the fourth inning ended their scoring at 10.
Marte, Stefen Romero, and Jesus Montero all recorded two hits in the contest, but the Tacoma offense was shut out until the top of the sixth inning, when they managed to push across three runs on a two-RBI triple from Romero and an RBI single from Montero.
Tacoma starting pitcher Sam Gaviglio tossed 2.1 innings, allowing seven runs on only two hits, walking five and hitting one batter.
The Rainiers (12-16) open up a four game road series with the Fresno Grizzlies (13-13) tomorrow, May 8. Right-hander Forrest Snow (1-1, 3.44) takes the mound for Tacoma against Fresno righty Brady Rodgers (1-2, 8.02). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
