Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, NY (5/6/2015) - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, dropped the rubber match of a three-game series to the Norfolk Tides, 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon. Bruce Billings threw six strong innings for the Chiefs. However, Norfolk tallied a run in the ninth to take two of three from Syracuse.
Norfolk (14-13) scored first in the top of the first inning off the bat of Chris Parmelee. After a Nolan Reimold double, the Tides' leading hitter drove in his International League-leading 18th RBI of the season to give Norfolk an early 1-0 lead. Parmelee scorched Syracuse all series with multi-hit games in all three contests against the Chiefs.
Syracuse (11-16) answered with a run against Norfolk starter Mike Wright in the bottom of the second. Matt den Dekker led off the frame with a single to right field. Cutter Dykstra advanced den Dekker to second on a fielders choice to second base. Two batters later Josh Johnson worked a walk. Emmanuel Burriss followed with an RBI single to right that tied the score at one. The RBI single also increased Burriss' hit streak to seven.
The game would stay tied until the ninth innings as both starters found a groove on the mound. Bruce Billings put together his second consecutive quality start for the Chiefs on Wednesday afternoon. The Syracuse starter allowed only three hits and an earned run with three strikeouts in six innings against Norfolk. Billings retired 13 straight Tides from the second inning until the sixth. Parmelee broke the streak with his second hit of the afternoon with two outs in the sixth inning.
The Tides turned the tide in the top of the ninth inning. Norfolk showed its patience against reliever Rich Hill, who walked two batters in his relief appearance. After walking Steve Clevenger with one away to put runners on first and second, Hill was relieved by Sam Runion. Christian Walker delivered his second hit of the game with a single up the middle to plate Parmelee. The second Norfolk run gave the Tides their second lead of the game at 2-1.
Three Tides relievers combined to shut out the Chiefs over the final four frames. Michael Bowden allowed two hits in two scoreless innings. Pedro Beato followed Bowden with a scoreless inning of his own. Finally, Oliver Drake struck out the side to close out the Chiefs in the ninth to nail down his sixth save of the season.
The Chiefs have their first scheduled day off of the season on Thursday. Syracuse is back in action on Friday as it opens up a three-game set against Durham at 7:05 pm. Taylor Jordan will get the start for the Chiefs against right hander Matt Buschmann for the Bulls.
