MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (MAY 6, 2015) - The Chicago Cubs have promoted Myrtle Beach Pelicans left-handed pitcher Gerardo Concepcion to Double-A Tennessee. In a corresponding roster move, right-handed pitcher Zach Cates will join the Pelicans from Double-A Tennessee.

Concepcion, 23, will make his first trip to the Double-A level. A native of Havana, Cuba, the 6'2" left-hander made seven appearances out of the bullpen for the Pelicans, pitching to a 3.55 ERA in 12 2/3 innings on the mound. With 14 strikeouts and 8 walks in that span, he departs Myrtle Beach with a record of 0-2. Concepcion spent parts of the 2014 season at three different levels, spending time with the Arizona League Cubs, Daytona Cubs, and the Kane County Cougars. Now in his fourth professional season, Concepcion was a member of the Industriales de La Habana, a team in the Cuban National Series, the primary amateur baseball league in Cuba.

Cates, 25, was a third-round selection by the San Diego Padres in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft out of Northeast Texas Community College. The Conway, Arkansas, native was acquired by the Cubs in the deal along with Anthony Rizzo in exchange for pitcher Andrew Cashner and outfielder Kyung-Min Na on Jan. 6, 2012. After seven appearances this year, the right-hander comes to Myrtle Beach with an 0-4 record and a 6.14 ERA over 7 1/3 innings with Double-A Tennessee.

In another set of moves, the Cubs have also activated right-handed pitcher Juan Paniagua, who was sent to the 7-day disabled list on April 18. Catcher Alberto Mineo will be placed on the 7-day disabled list.

With the roster moves, the Pelicans roster remains at 25 active players, which is the Carolina League limit, and includes three players on the disabled list.

The Pelicans continue their home stand with a doubleheader against the Salem Red Sox on Wednesday. First pitch at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. ET.

The 2015 season marks the 17th season for the Pelicans franchise and first as the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. For information on tickets to see the Pelicans in 2015, please call (843) 918-6000, e-mail info@myrtlebeachpelicans.com, or visit www.MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
