Salt Lake Bees News Release
SALT LAKE CITY (May 6, 2015) - Hall of Fame pitcher Goose Gossage will visit with 25 refugee children from the Bud Bailey Apartment Community in Salt Lake City as a reward for their participation in the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum's 'Be A Superior Example' (BASE) program.
WHO: Hall of Fame pitcher Goose Gossage, representatives from National Baseball Hall of Fame and Morgan Stanley, Bees players, 25 children from the Bud Bailey Apartment Community
WHAT: Bees host participants in the National Hall of Fame educational program
WHEN: Wednesday, May 6
4 p.m. through the first pitch
DETAILS: Prior to watching the Salt Lake Bees game against the Tacoma Rainiers at 6:35 p.m., the youth will meet Gossage and Brad Horn of the National Baseball Hall of Fame; experience Bees batting practice from the field; and tour Smith's Ballpark.
The nine-week, after-school educational program, known as "Sandlot School of After-School All-Stars," was made possible by the support of Morgan Stanley and partnerships with the Bees and the Housing Authority of Salt Lake County. The program used baseball to demonstrate a variety of subjects, including cultural diversity, women's history, civil rights, geography, statistics, economics, physical science and healthy living.
Salt Lake City is one of three cities, joining Kansas City and San Francisco, to participate in the museum's first National BASE Week from May 4-8. The BASE program launched in 2011 to provide a healthy living curriculum for students of all ages focused on four core tenets of playing the game the right way: fitness, nutrition, character and fair play.
The initiative is part of the Bees' year-round community outreach to support health and wellness, education and youth development.
