COLUMBUS, OHIO (May 5, 2015) - Major League Lacrosse announced today that Ohio Machine goalie Brian Phipps was named the Warrior Defensive Player of the Week after his performance in Ohio's 12-9 victory over the Chesapeake Bayhawks on Sunday, May 3.

Phipps posted 14 saves, nine goals against and held the Bayhawks goalless for the entire fourth quarter in the Machine's first victory of the 2015 season. Phipps also led the team with four groundballs in the game.

"This is well deserved for Brian," Machine Vice President & Head Coach Bear Davis said. "He is seeing the ball really well right now and he put the team on his shoulders in the game against the Bayhawks. Our defense played extremely well and gave up the type of shots we know Phipps saves. It was a team effort on Sunday. We put Phipps in a position to be successful and he took advantage of it."

Phipps got off to a hot start, as he stopped four of seven first quarter shots and gave the Machine a one goal lead after 15 minutes. With the score 11-9 heading into the final frame, Phipps stood tall and denied all six of the Bayhawks shots on goal in the final frame. It was the first time in 16 games that the Machine held an opponent scoreless in the fourth quarter.

Through three games this season, Phipps has 44 saves while posting a .550 save percentage and a 12.00 goals against average. His 44 saves ranks second among goalies that have played in three games this season.

The Machine travels to Florida on Saturday, May 9 for a 7 p.m. showdown against the Florida Launch. The team returns to Selby Stadium on Saturday, May 16 at 7 p.m. when the Charlotte Hounds come to town. Tickets for the game against Charlotte start at $12 and can be purchased by calling 614-754-1973 or visiting www.theohiomachine.com/tickets.
