Great Lakes Loons News Release
South Bend, Indiana - A short time ago in a ballpark relatively far away from Dow Diamond, the Great Lakes Loons knocked off the South Bend Cubs 2-0 on Monday night.
A bases-loaded situation with no outs in the top of the first gave the Loons a new hope, and although Josmar Cordero grounded into a double play, Faustino Oguisten scored to give the Loons a 1-0 edge. It marked the fourth time in 25 games an opponent scored first against South Bend.
Do or do not, there is no try, and try the Loons did to add to their lead. Before South Bend could strike back, Oguisten coupled his run in the first with an RBI knock up the middle in the second. Julian Leon touched home to give the Loons a 2-0 lead.
The run support proved plenty for starter Grant Holmes, the Dodgers 2014 first-round draft choice. The force was strong in the young padawan on Monday night as he tossed six innings for the first time in his professional career and allowed no runs on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
The sixth inning nearly turned into an attack of the Cubs as they loaded the bases with one out against Holmes. But when second baseman Kelvin Ramos made a difficult over-the-shoulder grab in shallow right and Justin Marra flew out, the threat proved to be a phantom menace.
The bullpen picked up where Holmes left off. Yeuri Gonzalez pitched a scoreless seventh and Joe Broussard retired his first five batters faced until Marra singled with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. It was not a trap, however, as Jeffrey Baez grounded into a fielder's choice to put the game in the Loons' win column.
With the win, the Loons (11-11) move to 7-3 on the road and tally their second shutout of the season. The Loons also blanked the West Michigan Whitecaps 6-0 on April 14. The South Bend Cubs (13-11) fall to 1-4 against the Loons this season. Game two in the series is set for 7:05 p.m. Tuesday. Pregame coverage starts at 6:35 p.m. on ESPN 100.9-FM.
Monday, May 11 marks the return of the Loons to Dow Diamond for a 7:05 p.m. showdown with the Dayton Dragons. Star Wars night at Dow Diamond is scheduled for Saturday, July 18.
The Great Lakes Loons are a ninth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. For tickets and more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com, or call 989-837-BALL.
