Tacoma Rainiers News Release
SALT LAKE CITY -- Ketel Marte's two-hit, two-RBI night steered the Tacoma Rainiers to a 4-3 series-opening win over the Salt Lake Bees at Smith's Ballpark on Monday night.
Marte broke open a scoreless game with a run-scoring double that drove in Shawn O'Malley in the top of the third inning. After the Bees tied the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the frame, Marte struck again in the fifth, delivering an RBI single that again scored O'Malley and put Tacoma on top for good.
Outfielder Stefen Romero helped double the Rainiers initial 1-0 lead with a ground out to shortstop that allowed James Jones to score in the third. Jones hit his second triple of the season in the seventh to drive in an insurance run that put Tacoma up 4-2.
As a team, the Rainiers recorded a total of seven hits against Salt Lake. Along with Marte, Tacoma saw John Hicks and the second baseman O'Malley turn in two-hit efforts.
Mike Montgomery (2-2) earned his second win of the season after surrendering just two runs on eight hits in 7.0 innings. The left-hander struck out eight and walked one in his fifth start this season. Lucas Luetge walked one and allowed one hit in one scoreless inning in the ninth to nab his second save of 2015.
The Rainiers (11-14) play the second game of a four-game series with the Bees (9-15) tomorrow, May 5. Right-hander Jordan Pries (2-1, 6.84) is expected to start for Tacoma against Bees right-hander Drew Rucinski (0-0, 5.79). First pitch is scheduled for 5:35 p.m.
