Springfield Cardinals News Release

North Little Rock, AR - The Arkansas Travelers claimed the series finale with a 6-5 walk-off win against the Springfield Cardinals before 3,192 fans at Dickey-Stephens Park on Monday night. Travelers LF Kentrail Davis provided the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.

With Cardinals RHP Arturo Reyes on the mound for his Double-A debut, the Travelers (16-8) plated the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning. Reyes retired the first batter, but then CF Chad Hinshaw and RF Cal Towey reached on consecutive singles. A fielder's choice put runners at the corners with two down, before Hinshaw darted home on an RBI infield single from 1B Wade Hinkle, lifting the Travs ahead, 1-0.

The Travs added a pair in the bottom of the second. 2B Brock Bond opened the frame with a walk, followed by a single from SS Drew Maggi. DH Sherman Johnson then pulled an RBI double to right-center field, plating Bond and moving Maggi to third. Maggi then came home on a passed ball when Reyes and C Michael Ohlman were on different pages, and the pitch hit off the home plate umpire and charomed away, making it 3-0. RHP Heath Wyatt took over on the mound with runners at the corners and one down, and navigated the Cardinals out of the inning with no further damage being done.

The Cardinals (6-18), though, came racing back into the game in the top of the third, striking for three runs against RHP Alan Busenitz. With one down, 3B Patrick Wisdom sparked the comeback with a walk. He moved to second on a perfectly-placed bunt single from CF Charlie Tilson. 2B Breyvic Valera followed with a single to right field that led to a fielding error on RF Cal Towey, enabling Wisdom to score, Tilson to take third and Valera to advance to second base. DH Jacob Wilson then drove in his team-leading 17th RBI, lifting a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in Tilson from third and move Valera to third. Valera came in the final ninety feet on a game-tying RBI infield single from 1B Jonathan Rodriguez, and the Cards were back even, 3-3.

Springfield swung in front in the top of the fifth inning. Wisdom again served as the catalyst, ripping a leadoff single to center field to start the stanza. With that base hit, Wisdom has hit safely in eight of his last 10 games. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Tilson, and then raced home on an RBI single from Valera, lifting the Cardinals into the 4-3 advantage.

After Wyatt completed a scoreless outing through his 2.2 innings, RHP Joey Donofrio posted a quick 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth. Arkansas, however, concocted the comeback in the bottom of the sixth. Two walks and a single loaded the bases with no outs against Donofrio. Hinshaw then pulled a game-tying RBI single to left field, advancing everyone ninety feet and keeping the bases loaded. LHP Iden Nazario took over on the mound to face Towey and induced a fly ball to center field. The fly out, however, was deep enough for the sacrifice fly, scoring Maggi from third for the 5-4 lead. Nazario, though, induced another fly out and dealt a strikeout to get the Cardinals out of the jam only trailing by one run.

Springfield again squared the score, tying the game in the top of the seventh against RHP Austin Wood (W, 4-0). Once again, Wisdom started the rally, crushing a triple off the wall in right field. After Tilson worked a walk, Valera skied an RBI sacrifice fly to bring in Wisdom, tying the game at 5-5.

Nazario kept it tied with a scoreless bottom of the seventh, before LHP Justin Wright (L, 1-1) blanked the Travelers in the eighth. However, Arkansas dealt the final blow in the bottom of the ninth. 3B Brian Hernandez led off with a single to right field, quickly moving to second on a sacrifice bunt from Hinkle. Davis then sliced the game-winning RBI single inside the shallow left field line, bringing Hernandez home to propel the Travelers to the 6-5 walk-off win.
