Augusta GreenJackets News Release

AUGUSTA, GA: Sunday, May 3rd the Augusta GreenJackets (11-13, 9-9) hosted the Delmarva Shorebirds (14-9, 10-7) for a Sunday afternoon contest. With dogs flooding Lake Olmstead Stadium for Bark in the Park Day, LHP Nick Gonzalez (1-1, ERA 4.91) and RHP Matt Grimes (2-0 ERA 4.88) took the bump for each team. At the end of nine innings the scoreboard read a score of five to three in favor of the Delmarva Shorebirds.

Everything was going fairly smoothly for GreenJackets starting pitcher Nick Gonzalez until the third inning. Shorebirds catcher Jonah Heim led off the inning with single to center field. A sacrifice bunt by Jay Gonzalez moved Heim into scoring position at second base. A base hit by Steve Wilkerson gave the Shorebirds the first of four runs in the inning. Designed hitter Alex Murphy drove in Wilkerson with his eighth double of the year. Finally Conor Bierfeldt put the nail on the coffin for the inning by slamming a two run home run over the left field fence to give the Shorebirds a four to zero lead after four and half innings.

Back to back doubles in the top of the sixth inning by Shorebirds hitters Jared Breen and Elier Leyva added another run in the top of the sixth inning. Down five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning the GreenJackets finally responded to the hole they dug themselves in. With one out GreenJackets lead off batter Johneshwy Fargas singled on a line drive to center field. Travious Relaford then followed Fargas with a single of his own to center field. Jonah Arenado who has just been collecting RBIs this homestand knocked in Fargas for the GreenJackets first run of the game. Sixth round draft pick out of Rice University Skyler Ewing came up in a big way for the GreenJackets. Ewing hit a double to right field that got past right fielder Elier Leyva and allowed Relaford and Arenado to score cut the lead to five to three. The two RBIs were Ewing's first RBIs in his past ten games. Shorebirds starting pitcher Matthew Grimes was ejected from the game after arguing with home plate umpire Grant Conrad. Forcing manager Ryan Minor to go RHP Stefan Crichton (1-1 ERA 2.85). Crichton was able to make Seth Harrison ground out to shortstop Jared Breen to end GreenJackets rally.

Both pitching staffs did an excellent job of quieting down both teams' bats after the first six innings. In the final three frames of action neither team was able to put any more runs on the board leaving the final score at five to three, giving the Shorebirds the Sunday afternoon victory. GreenJackets starter Nick Gonzalez will receive his first loss of the season, Matthew Grimes will now be (2-0) as a starter, and Stefan Cricton gets the save after working three and a third innings of relief pitching.

Tomorrow Monday, May 4th is the final day of the second homestand for the Augusta GreenJackets.
