Strong Pitching Helps Jupiter to 1-0 Win

Jupiter Hammerheads News Release

JUPITER, Fla. - The Jupiter Hammerheads used a dominate pitching performance from Sean Townsley to slide past the Palm Beach Cardinals 1-0 at Roger Dean Stadium on Sunday afternoon in the series finale of the Fins vs. Feathers rivalry. The Jupiter pitching staff limited the Cardinals to just four hits in the victory.

With the 1-0 victory on Sunday the Jupiter Hammerheads improved to 10-14, while Palm Beach slipped to 13-11 overall. The Jupiter win also knotted the season series at four wins each, while both four-game series have been split by the two teams.

In the win, Hammerhead starter Sean Townsley had his best and longest outing of the year. Townsley (1-3) went six full innings to collect his first win of the season. He only allowed two Cardinal hits with four walks scattered throughout the evening, while striking out six batters. Juancito Martinez earned his third save of the year with a scoreless ninth frame where he allowed one hit and one walk. Martinez ended the game with a full-count strikeout, while Palm Beach had runners on first and second.

The offense gave Townsley just enough run support for the win with one run coming in the sixth inning. Yefri Perez led off the inning with a walk, then Austin Dean singled and Cameron Flynn was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Brian Anderson's sacrifice fly attempt came up short for the first out, but Felix Munoz followed with a sacrifice fly to center field that was just deep enough to score the winning run and break the tie. Perez scored on a close play at the plate in which he slid past the tag of Cardinal catcher, Jose Gonzalez.

Dean led the way offensively for the Hammerheads with the only multi-hit game going 2-3 with a walk. Christian Yelich began his rehab assignment with Jupiter Sunday, but struggled in his first day back since April 19 going 0-2 with a strikeout.

Jimmy Reed (2-1) pitched well for Palm Beach, but took the tough loss for his first of the season. Reed tossed seven full innings, giving up one earned run on five hits with five strikeouts.

The Hammerheads return to Roger Dean Stadium on Monday night as they welcome the Charlotte Stone Crabs to town for a three-game series. First pitch for the series opener is slated for 6:35 p.m. To purchase tickets, please call (561) 630-1828 or visit RogerDeanStadium.com.
