Four Hits and One Run Not Enough as Potomac Falls 4-1 to Red Sox
May 1, 2015 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Potomac Nationals News Release
Salem, VA --- The Salem Red Sox (10-10-Overall, 5-5-Home) used two, two-run doubles to plate their four runs and cruise to the 4-1 victory in Game One vs. the Potomac Nationals (10-12-Overall, 6-5-Road) at LewisGale Field on Friday evening.
The Nationals sent LHP Matthew Spann (0-4, 5.87) to the mound for the fourth time this season, still in search of his first win of the season against RHP Kevin McAvoy (2-1, 1.66), who was toeing the rubber for the fourth time this season for Salem.
McAvoy was erratic in the top of the first and walked the bases loaded; missing the zone with eight of his first nine pitches to begin the ballgame. Unfortunately Potomac was unable to capitalize on the opportunity and came away with a zero in the frame.
The game traveled to the bottom of the second scoreless after McAvoy struck out the side in the top half of the inning. With two outs 2B Wendall Rijo doubled off Spann. C Jordan Betts reached on an infield single and the DH Mario Martinez brought them both home with his first double of the season for a 2-0 Red Sox lead.
One inning later, in the top of the third, Potomac cracked the scoreboard against McAvoy. SS Stephen Perez walked, the fourth free pass issued by McAvoy in the game. DH John Wooten singled him to third and C Spencer Kieboom, who had his nine-game hitting streak snapped, reached on an error that Perez was able to score on to cut the lead to 2-1 Salem.
It remained 2-1 until the bottom of the fifth when the two-run double struck again. Lead-off man CF Manuel Margot reached in an infield single and SS Tzu Wei-Lin singled Margot to third. The 1B Sam Travis slapped a two bagger that scored both Margot and Wei-Lin for a 4-1 lead.
Spann pitched six innings, a new season high, allowing nine hits and four runs (all earned), he walked two and struck out two in the loss, his fourth of the season.
LHP David Napoli logged two scoreless innings to complete the ballgame for Potomac, allowing two hits.
McAvoy's final line was six innings, three hits, one run (earned), he walked four and struck out six in the win, his second of the year.
RHP Joe Gunkel pitched a scoreless two frames, allowing one base knock and LHP Mike Adams (SV 2) came on and closed out the game for Salem with a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his second save of the season. Potomac has now lost six of their last seven contests.
Game Two from Salem, VA is tomorrow night at LewisGale Field with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 pm. Game Two features RHP Nick Pivetta (1-3, 1.35) for Potomac vs. LHP Daniel McGrath (1-1, 3.65) for Salem.
The "P-Nats Lead-Off Show" will begin the broadcast at 5:50 pm and take you up to first pitch and you can listen live at www.potomacnationals.com and via the TunIn Radio App.
