Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Lancaster, CA - Michael Johnson nailed down his first save of the year, as he needed just three pitches to retire the only batter he faced, as the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes earned two of three with a 3-2 victory over the Lancaster JetHawks on Thursday night.

Leading 3-1, Quakes' reliever A.J. Vanegas got into some ninth-inning trouble, as he allowed a pair of hits and a walk, including an RBI two-out double to Jack Mayfield, as Lancaster pushed across a run to make it a one-run game at 3-2. The left-hander, Johnson, was summoned into the game to face left-handed hitting Danry Vasquez. With just two hits in 20 at-bats against left-handed pitching, the move paid off for Manager Bill Haselman, as Vasquez grounded out to first baseman Cody Bellinger to end the game and leave two in scoring position.

Quakes' starter Jose De Leon was strong on Thursday, but allowed a home run on the first pitch he threw, as Brett Phillips took him deep to center field for a 1-0 lead.

De Leon (1-1) would go on to throw six total frames, allowing just the one run on six hits.

The Quakes would finally give him some run support, as Rancho tallied two in the fifth against JetHawks' starter Adrian Houser. Dillon Moyer laid down a perfect bunt with runners at first and third and only one out, as Paul Hoenecke scored to tie the game at 1-1. Devan Ahart followed with an RBI single off Hauser (0-1), scoring Tyler Ogle with the go-ahead run to make it 2-1.

Rancho added an important insurance run in the eighth, as Joey Curletta doubled home Bellinger for a 3-1 lead.

Rob Rogers pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, but needed help from Vanegas in the eighth, as he came on and stranded two Lancaster runners on base.

The Quakes (12-9) move into first place all alone after winning two of three in the Lancaster series, but finish the road trip with a 3-4 mark overall. Rancho hosts Inland Empire on Friday night, as the Quakes open a seven-game home stand with first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm.

Friday night will be exciting at LoanMart Field, as Dodgers' closer Kenley Jansen is expected to be in uniform for the Quakes and potentially start for Rancho. Originally scheduled starter Johnathan Richy (2-1) would then potentially follow, should Jansen start in the rehab appearance. The 66ers will go with Chris Ellis (0-2) in the opener.

On Friday night, 1,500 fans will take home a Yasiel Puig Bat Flip Bobblehead, thanks to WaBa Grill. Gates open at 6:05pm and first pitch is 7:05pm. Tickets are available at (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. We hope to see you very soon at LoanMart Field...Go Quakes!
