Game Preview: Green Bay at Bemidji

Bemidji, Minn. - The 3-4 Green Bay Blizzard will travel to Bemidji, Minnesota this weekend as they play their second game versus the 2-6 Bemidji Axemen. The first meeting of the season between the two teams saw the Axemen win on a touchdown in the last seconds of the game.

The Blizzard are coming off of a big 52-49 win against the Cedar Rapids Titans. Green Bay is sitting at third place in the United Conference, two games out of second place which is occupied by Cedar Rapids. The Green Bay offense is averaging 51 points per game which is third in the IFL but their defense gives up an IFL worst average of 57.3 points per game.

The Blizzard offense is led by quarterback Donovan Porterie who is 117-194 for 1,319 passing yards and 27 touchdown passes. Porterie averages 188.4 passing yards per game which ranks second in the league while his 27 passing touchdowns is also second in the IFL. Porterie also has rushed for 143 yards and 11 touchdowns. Donte Sawyer leads the team in every receiving category by bringing in 31 receptions for 344 yards and six touchdowns. Jamie Bender and Dontrell Johnson lead the team with three interceptions each.

In the last meeting between the Axemen and Blizzard, Porterie went 12-18 for 159 passing yards and four passing touchdowns. Porterie also rushed for three touchdowns in the game in Green Bay. Markeith Summers led the Blizzard with 77 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

The Axemen have lost four straight games after dropping another game to the Nebraska Danger 74-55. Bemidji sits in last place in the United Conference but with a win this weekend they can move ahead of Green Bay for third place. The Bemidji offense is ranked third in the IFL with 1,862 total yards and their 648 rushing yards are also ranked third highest in the league. The Axemen offense also leads the IFL with 160 first downs. Last game the Bemidji offense put up 55 points and 325 total yards versus the IFL's second ranked defense. The struggle for the Axemen has been penalties as they lead the IFL with 83 total penalties.

One of the bright spots for the Axemen is the arrival of new quarterback Dante Perez. The former North Dakota State quarterback won the IFL Offensive Player of the Week award after going 25-38 for 274 passing yards and seven passing touchdowns versus the second ranked Nebraska defense in his IFL debut. Running back Mulku Kalokoh still leads the team with 268 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns. Kalokoh also leads the team with 898 all-purpose yards and four return touchdowns. Josh Jarboe leads the team with 50 receptions for 564 receiving yards and seven touchdown catches. Jarboe's 70.5 receiving yards per game is third highest in the IFL. Middle linebacker Jory Johnson leads the Bemidji defense with 41 total tackles, 4.5 tackles for a loss and three interceptions.

The last game between the Axemen and Blizzard saw Mulku Kalokoh rush for 109 yards, three rushing touchdowns along with scoring two receiving touchdowns that included the game winner. Kalokoh also set the Bemidji franchise record for all-purpose yards in a game with 246.

Another close game is expected between these two neighboring teams as they fight for position in the United Conference.
