Birmingham Barons News Release
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Barons snapped a two-game skid Monday evening in Jacksonville, Fla., behind a dominant pitching performance from starter Myles Jaye. The right-hander no-hit the Suns through seven innings and struck out seven, leading Birmingham to a 3-2 win at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
Two plated was the only run support Jaye would need, while relievers Cody Winiarski and Raul Fernandez posted a hold and save, respectively, to seal the win. Jacksonville's only two runs came in the ninth inning as Suns' first baseman Visosergy Rosa tacked on a two-run homer.
The Barons' runs came courtesy of Courtney Hawkins and Brian Fletcher in the first and third innings. Hawkins drove in the game's first run on a double down the right-field line to score Jacob May from third, who led off the game with a double through the hole at short.
May singled to lead off the third and swiped second to put himself in scoring position. With one on and two out, Hawkins tripled to center to score May. Hawkins proceeded to score on a Fletcher single to left-center.
May ended the night 3-for-5 with two stolen bases, and Hawkins was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Third baseman Jeremy Farrell three times and a single and two walks, and first baseman Danny Hayes reached base twice on two walks.
Birmingham improves to 8-9 with the win while Jacksonville falls to 8-9 with the loss. Jaye picks up the win, his second on the year, and Fernandez's save was his first of the season. Suns' starter Trevor Williams drops to 0-2, charged with the loss. Williams gave up all three runs on eight hits.
The fourth game of the series is set for 6:05 p.m. Tuesday night as the Barons look to even up the set. The game can be heard live on WERC 105.5 FM or at WERCFM.com.
The team returns to Birmingham April 30 to host the Tennessee Smokies for a five-game series. Home stand highlights include Thirsty Thursday, NASCAR Night featuring an appearance from Bobby Allison, a Babe Ruff gnome giveaway, kids t-shirt giveaway, an appearance by former Braves catcher Charlie O'Brien and Autism Friendly Day.
