Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
SUPER SUNDAY: A three-run first sparked the start of a convincing RailRiders win over Pawtucket in Sunday's homestand finale, 8-3. The RailRiders split the four-game series with the Red Sox (11-7) and went 4-3 on the homestand.
LORD I WAS BORN A GAMELING MAN: Ben Gamel logged a pair of two-out RBIs in the victory. The outfielder ranks among the IL's best in batting average (1st, .404), on-base percentage (2nd, .472) and slugging percentage (4th, .596). His three triples co-lead the circuit and give him as many or more than five IL teams (Buffalo, Lehigh Valley, Louisville, Norfolk, Pawtucket).
SLING SLADE: Slade Heathcott posted a pair of hits, a walk and scored twice. The RailRiders' usual leadoff man owns multiple hits in five of his last six games, hitting .545 (12-for-22) in that time with five RBIs. With 23 hits he trails only Lehigh Valley's Maikel Franco (25) for the most knocks in the IL.
R&R: Rob Refsnyder went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. He enters today coming off his first back-to-back multi-hit games since a three-game surge from Aug. 16-18 of last season at Pawtucket. Four of the usual three-hole hitter's seven RBIs have come in this short two-game spurt.
POWER SURGE: Sunday snapped a pair of long power droughts. Rob Segedin's first home run of 2015 snapped the team's season-long seven-game stretch without a dinger. However, Pawtucket's Humberto Quintero and Matt Spring each went deep as well, halting SWB's season-best eight-game span without giving up a round-tripper. In the International League, only Buffalo (5) has surrendered fewer round-trippers than SWB (6).
STOP, THIEVES!: The RailRiders have caught just three base swipers in 20 attempts this year. Despite an .150 caught-stealing efficiency, SWB does not live in the IL's caught-stealing basement. Charlotte (.130), Buffalo (.125), Columbus (.125) and Rochester (.111) all have worse efficiencies.
BRAVO: The 2014 RailRiders took six of the eight overall clashes with Gwinnett including a four-game sweep at Coolray Field. They outscored the G-Braves, 45-21, doubled them up in homers, 8-4, and took the season series for a third straight year. SWB has won 19 of its last 24 (.792) against Gwinnett.
SOUTHERN EXPOSURE: Tonight, the RailRiders begin a long stretch dominated by Southern Division competition. Each of SWB's next 10 games and 24 of the next 27 will sport a Southern Division squad as the foe. The 2014 RailRiders went 14-18 against the South. While they had a winning record against Gwinnett, they posted losing marks against each of the division's other three teams (Charlotte, 2-6; Durham, 3-5; Norfolk, 3-5). The team owned an 8-8 road against versus its southern brothers, but half of those wins came against the G-Braves.
OFF THE RAILS: The RailRiders' pitching staff leads the IL with 153 strikeouts...SWB's Cole Figueroa entered today as the toughest hitter to whiff in the IL (31.5 PA/K)...Tonight the RailRiders bid for their fourth straight win away from PNC Field...They also look to log their third error-free game in a row...The team has not accomplished that since a four-gamer from Aug. 23-25, 2014 when it lost a series at Rochester...The RailRiders' 20 errors make for the IL's third-highest total...Gwinnett leads the IL in sacrifices (10) and stolen bases (21), but ranks last in runs scored (3.3/game) thanks in part to the circuit's third-worst on-base (.306) and slugging percentages (.327)...No IL team has hit fewer home runs than Gwinnett (3)...One of those home runs was hit by former RailRider Adonis Garcia who owns or shares the team lead in hits (19), RBIs (8), doubles (5), batting average (.339), slugging percentage (.482).
