Sudbury Wolves News Release
The Sudbury Wolves welcomed 22 young players and their families to Sudbury this weekend for the 2015 Wolves Orientation Camp. Fifteen players recently selected in the 2015 OHL Priority Selection attended the two day camp which featured first overall selection David Levin. The young Israeli forward didn't disappoint as his exceptional offensive skills were front and centre during Sunday morning's scrimmage session. Team White prevailed in the shoot-out after the teams played to a 2-2 tie during regulation time.
Sunday's scrimmage session was well-played as Team Blue led by Levin took an early 2-0 lead on goals by Levin and North Bay native Ben Garagan. Levin scored on a hard accurate snap-shot from the slot area and beat a surprised Jake McGrath in goal for Team White. Garagan then scored a highlight reel goal as the skilled forward beat a defenceman one on one and then scored on a back-hand deke on McGrath. Garagan was one of the pleasant surprises of the camp as the Northern Ontario forward was selected in the fifth round of the draft. Garagan created a number of scoring opportunities with his speed and slick moves. McGrath was outstanding the rest of the way in goal for Team White.
Local prospect Alex Guido scored for Team White on a nice pass from Owen Lane. Guido was a local invite to the Wolves' camp after a solid season with the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves Major Midgets. Guido fired a quick hard shot off of the crossbar. A few minutes later, Owen Lane scored from in close to tie the contest. Lane was selected by the Wolves with the first selection in the third round from the Kitchener Jr. Rangers. The Kitchener native showed why he was regarded as one of the best natural goal scorers in the OHL Priority Selection.
Lane continued his heroics in the shoot-out with a great back-hand deke on Evan Fear. Fear, from Chicago, Illinois, was very solid in net for Team Blue. The 6'1" goaltender made the 13-hour trek to Sudbury and showed why he is regarded as one of the top young goalies in the USA in his age category. Keir Cummings and local product Ryan Mooney also scored in the shoot-out with Team White coming out on top.
Over 500 local hockey fans attended the two-day camp which featured on-ice sessions at Countryside arena and off-ice testing at RHP Training Centre. Once again, Owen Lane led in many of the fitness tests as he did at the OHL Combines where the Kitchener native finished as one of the strongest players among the 80 players in attendance.
Some of the other pleasant surprises at the Development Camp included MacCauley Carson who was selected in the second-round by the Wolves. The Barrie native showed tremendous strength, skill and work ethic. The big centreman stands 6'1" and weighs-in at 200 lbs. Carson was an offensive force throughout the camp and played with a physical edge.
Other Camp notables included 2014 drafted forwards Cameron Searles and Nick Romero along with defencemen Carson Moniz, Matthew Barnes and Brandon Bastasin. The Wolves' young goaltenders Jake McGrath and Evan Fear were very solid in goal and had an opportunity to work with Wolves' goalie coach Miguel Beaudry to close-out the weekend camp.
Nine of the Wolves' drafted players will next participate in the OHL GOLD CUP from May 7-10th to be held in Kitchener. The Sudbury Wolves coaching staff will be setting-up some mid-summer fitness tests in Southern Ontario with all players on the Wolves' 50-man protected list.
